  • NUR 212Z - Nursing IV

    10 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 4 Lec.

    Nursing IV is a continuation of Nursing III. Emphasis is placed on advanced concepts of medical-surgical nursing and prioritization of patient-centered nursing care in various  age groups. Content and clinical experiences focus on individuals with interruptions related to protective mechanisms (cancer), sexuality, nutrition, elimination and higher level needs (behavioral health). Students participate in a variety of acute and community health settings which illustrate the diverse nature of health care and the health care environment. Psychomotor skills are developed and assessed for competency through the use of the college, clinical, and simulation laboratory. The Simulation Lab is used to apply theoretical principles and nursing techniques. Theoretical principles and nursing techniques are correlated throughout the course with subsequent application and evaluation in the clinical laboratory. A leadership/delegation experience provides an opportunity for integration of prior learning, inter-professional collaboration and organization of priority needs in multi-patient assignments. Students are challenged to apply evidence-based principles to planning care and experiences to demonstrate a spirit of inquiry and professional growth.

  • NUR 213 - Nursing Perspectives

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lec.

    The structure and nature of the nursing profession as it relates to today’s society is presented, including: historical perspectives, ethical and legal responsibilities, employment preparation, career opportunities, educational pathways and legislation affecting nursing practice.  Additionally, patient advocacy, health care delivery patterns, nursing informatics, performance/quality improvement initiatives, concepts of management, research utilization, role transition and professional nursing organizations are also presented.

  • NUR 231 - Nursing Clinical Practicum

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 0.5 Lec., 2.5 Lab

    An intensive one week elective that provides reality-oriented nursing practice based upon knowledge and skills accrued by nursing students during previous semesters. This elective course is intended to permit the nursing students the curricular freedom to identify their own unique and personal learning needs and provide experiences to meet these needs under the guidance of a clinical nursing instructor in an acute care hospital setting. This course offers the student the unique exposure to a full day’s shift of clinical experience for a week’s time; thereby allowing for continuity and intensity of clinical learning not provided in other nursing clinical laboratory courses.

  • NUR 232 - Intra-Operative Nursing Practicum

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 0.5 Lec., 2.5 Lab

    An intensive one week elective that provides reality-oriented nursing practice in the intra-operative phase of peri-operative nursing based upon knowledge and skills accrued by nursing students during previous semesters. This elective course is intended to familiarize the nursing students with the multiple roles of the RN in the operating room, provide experiences in the operating room utilizing acquired skills under the guidance of a clinical nursing instructor and preceptor in the intra-operative hospital setting. This course offers the student the unique exposure to a full day’s shift of clinical surgical experience for a week’s time; thereby allowing for continuity and intensity of clinical learning not provided in other nursing clinical laboratory courses.

    Designed to expand the nurse’s knowledge, skills and techniques in eliciting a health history; performing physical assessments; recognizing normal and deviations from normal; and recording data accurately, concisely and clearly. The emphasis is on the skill of performing a systematic health assessment of adults and children, incorporating developmental principles and socio-cultural aspects.     3 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 lec.

    At the completion of this course, the student will comprehend and present the nutritional needs for each specific stage of life including preconception, pregnancy, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and advanced age.  Strategies for integrating food and supplement therapy into nutrition-related problems such as picky eating, special-needs diets, obesity issues, disease states, and eating disorders will be included.

  • NTR 220 - Food Chemistry

    3 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 lec.

    Food Chemistry is the study of the nature of foods, the causes of deterioration, the principles underlying food processing and the improvement of foods for the consuming public with a focus on nutritive value and health impact. Food Chemistry is designed to give students an understanding of the chemical aspects of food composition, giving emphasis to the functional properties and chemical reactions of the major components of foods: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and water. The course also provides an integrated picture of food safety, food preservation, and food production.

  • OFT 101 - Keyboarding/WP Applications I

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lec.

    Designed for the nonprofessional keyboarding student who has no prior keyboarding experience. Basic instruction in alphanumeric keyboarding techniques on the microcomputer for the student seeking data entry skills will be taught to provide “touch typing” competency. In addition, word processing software will be used to format and print basic business correspondence; simple reports will be introduced.

  • PHA 150 - Pharmacology for Substance Abuse Counselors

    3 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

    This course is an introduction to the topics in pharmacology that are most relevant to students studying to become substance abuse counselors. Major topics will include: basic neurobiology; psychopharmacological principles; issues of MICA/dual-diagnosed clients; the treatment of depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder and personality disorders; and the treatment of chemical dependency and co-occurring conditions.

  • PHA 160 - Surgical Pharmacology

    A survey course designed to meet the needs of health professionals or other interested students who wishes to gain an understanding of the principles of pharmacology. Major topics will include: legal regulations, prescriptions, calculations, interactions and uses of drugs and chemotherapeutic agents for anti infective therapy and cancer treatment, as well as toxicology.

    This course will raise the issue of the nature of ethics, morality and purposeful existence in relation to the nature of happiness and self satisfaction. We will read about and examine several of the great thinkers from Plato to Nietzsche. The questions of social responsibility and moral obligation will be raised. The issues of legal and social force, emotion and reason will be raised as they relate to moral problems. We will cover topics such as the nature of desire, duty, pleasure, pain, self respect, self esteem, personal interests, holiness, sinfulness, conscience and happiness.

  • PHI 155 - Political Philosophy: Community, Culture and State Power

    3 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

    This course will explore the political relationship between what it means to be a free individual, a member of a community, and a citizen of a Federal state. In the enquiry we will define how these political relationships shape our understanding of crucial issues concerning the environment, culture, and social power. The philosophical context of the course will grow out of readings about fundamental political ideas that shape thought and action in contemporary politics. We will examine the ideas that have shaped the Liberal-democratic state as we know it today and contrast them with the more radical and marginal ideas of communitarians, populists, traditionalists, the religious right, and single-issue political groups. Issues of environment, culture and the state will serve as the practical framework against which the basic ideas of political philosophy will be examined and criticized. Classical ideas such as liberty, equality and fraternity will permeate lecture and discussion. These will in turn be critically mediated by contemporary concepts, ideas and theories in thought.

    Aesthetic experience is the subject matter of this course. The life experience of several great artists as well as our own everyday experience will be explored in order to study the meaning and nature of art, beauty, and creativity. Through enquiry into the nature of painting, poetry, film, music, dance, architecture, and other art forms, we will examine the nature of the arts and their significance for us. Readings will cover several of the more important theories of art from Plato to the present.

  • PHI 169 - Philosophy of Religion

    3 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

    This course will cover six major world religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Taoism, and Islam. We will deal with these religions historically, critically and comparatively. Constant reference will be made to comparable and contrasting aspects of each of these religions. A main theme of the course will be to examine the mystical core of each of the religions. Additionally, we will explore the meaning and nature of religious experience. Basic concepts in religious thought will be addressed such as faith, salvation, God, grace, miracles, life after death, and healing. We will not deal with institutional doctrine or customs but with the ideas, experiences, and meaning of religious life itself. The focus will be the nature of religious experience especially our own.

  • PHI 180 - Philosophy of Love & Sexuality: Desire, Intimacy & Compassion

    3 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

    This course will explore the nature of love as a unique human phenomenon and in its relationship to sexuality. The exploration will cover love’s various manifestations in terms of the experiences of desire, intimacy and compassion. The course will be structured as an introductory level philosophy course, familiarizing the students with the questions of the nature of being, the problem of knowledge and the role of values in determining our understanding and experience of love. Both the Platonic and Freudian traditions will be utilized to conceptualize and problematize the erotic phenomenon.

  • PHL 100 - Phlebotomy I

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lab

    This course deals with the role of the Phlebotomist in the clinical laboratory setting. Students will gain knowledge of: equipment selection and preparation, asepsis in handling blood and equipment, proper disposal of blood contaminated materials, collection process (capillary and venipuncture), proper labeling, documentation and transport of specimens. Students will be evaluated on performance of procedures and completion of the collection process.

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lec.

    Topics covered are intravenous and special collection procedures; elderly, home, and long-term care collections; and toxicology and drug testing procedures. Additionally, students will review liability issues; difficult draws and complications; arterial punctures; and the additional duties of a phlebotomist. Lastly, the course offers a Phlebotomy Certification exam review.

    This clinical based course has the students assigned to a clinic in an affiliated hospital/clinic for 180 total hours. This course allows the students to apply and practice the skills learned in PHL 100, MED 103 and PHL 101.

  • PED 107 - Movement Analysis I

    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab

    This course is designed to prepare students on the basics of analyzing sports movement or technique utilizing digital video analysis and Dartfish Sports Video Software and hardware. Students will be able to demonstrate an introductory understanding of the software and hardware processes used to shoot, capture, analyze and distribute digital video using Dartfish video software. The vocabulary/language associated with the use of digital video and the sports industry will give students a broad knowledge of terms associated with this computer application.

  • PED 132 - Bowling

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab

    Designed for beginning bowlers or ones with limited knowledge and skills. The course will address the mechanical principles involved in the approach, release  techniques and techniques of spot bowling for strikes and spares. Topics covered include equipment, related terminology, etiquette and safety factors, scoring, four-step approach, delivery, aiming, and making spares and splits. Students of all ability levels will enjoy this course.  Sport Video Technology will be incorporated in teaching and improvement of the basic bowling techniques.  There is a lab fee for this course.

  • PED 135 - Adventure Education

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab

    This is an activity course designed to encourage participants to develop greater self confidence and at the same time acquire a sense of trust and commitment to their classmates. Students are given the opportunity to test themselves against physical and emotional limits through exploration of a series of group and personal challenges to attain higher levels of performance. Experiences include initiatives, trust activities, team building experiences, and the low and high challenge ropes course.

    Provides the student with a review of proper warm-up, stretching, and cool-down methods. Additionally, the basics of aerobic fitness training (step, dance, and cardio-kick), basic group fitness practices using body weight, machines, circuit and functional training methodologies will also be covered.

  • PED 148 - Zumba

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab.

    Zumba is a dance-fitness class that combines fast and slow rhythms from Latin and international music. The class adheres to a specific interval pacing formula, maximizing caloric output and body toning using easy steps and high energy music. Students will learn basic principles of aerobic, interval, and calisthenic training to maximize caloric output, cardiovascular benefits, and total body toning. Students will be introduced to basic anatomy, kinesiology and exercise physiology.  No dance experience necessary.

  • PED 155 - Weight Training

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab

    Provides the student with an understanding of the muscular system and how weight training methods are taught that will enable a student to design a personal program for a lifetime of fitness. The course includes the use of cardiovascular equipment, traditional free weights, and CYBEX equipment. Safe use of equipment will be covered.

  • PED 161 - Martial Arts

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab.

    A practical study of the modern derivatives of early history fighting arts, and the evolution of martial arts from its roots in ancient Asian cultures to its present applications.  Students will compare and contrast such martial arts styles as kung fu, karate and ju jitsu with their derivatives such as self-defense tactics and mixed martial arts. Brief lectures will be combined with physical hands on training and students will become proficient in the basic skills that are common to these styles.

  • PED 168 - Racquetball

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab

    Introduces the fast-paced game of four-wall racquetball. It includes the basic strokes, serves, safety during play, rules, court positioning and strategy. Singles, cutthroat and doubles are played. Students are required to have a racket and eye safety equipment for each class.

  • PED 255 - Advanced Weight Training

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab

    Provides the student with review of the muscular system and details how alternative resistance training methods will illicit desired responses from the body. The course includes the use of medicine balls, exercise balls, resistance bands, TRX, BOSU balls and other applicable cutting-edge equipment. Safe use of equipment will be covered in addition to proper warm-up, stretching and cool-down methods. This course should be considered as an alternative to PED 155 for those students who will go on to utilize these advanced techniques in a professional setting.

  • PED 275 - Lifeguard Training with Advanced First Aid

    3 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lec., 2 Lab

    This course  focuses on the skills, techniques, and knowledge needed by students to achieve certification from the American Red Cross in Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer (which includes AED training for adults and children). The course emphasizes the importance of a safe, healthy lifestyle, as well as the knowledge to prevent lifestyle related injuries or related illnesses on and off the job. American Red Cross guidelines and sanctions are adhered to in the development and instruction of this course.

    Pre-Requisites: Student will be able to swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl (100 yards) and breaststroke (100 yards) followed by a choice of either (100 yards); student will be able to swim 20 yards, submerge, retrieve a 10 lb. brick off the pool floor, return 20 yards keeping both hands on the brick (supine position, no goggles permitted for this portion), and finally exit the pool without the assistance of steps or a ladder in under 100 seconds. (By permission of instructor).

    Student athletes may earn one academic credit for each semester of participation on each intercollegiate athletic team, with a grade of S/U. Students may receive a maximum of 2 credits of participation on each intercollegiate athletic team by fulfilling all educational requirements of the sport(s) which they may elect to participate. Credit for intercollegiate athletics fulfills the 2 credit HPE requirement.

Students may receive a maximum of 2 credits of participation on each intercollegiate athletic team by fulfilling all educational requirements of the sport(s) in which they may elect to participate.   • PTA 112L - Physical Therapy Foundations Laboratory

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lab

    This course provides content and practice that will prepare students for Clinical Orthopedics Lab (PTA131L).  Common tests and measures the PTA may perform within selected interventions in the physical therapist’s plan of care are introduced.  The course includes a brief introduction to manual muscle testing, goniometry, testing of sensory status and deep tendon reflexes.  Basic theories, principles and methods of therapeutic exercise and stretching are covered.  Demonstration and practice of the fundamentals are included.  Beginning documentation, in SOAP format, will be studied with emphasis on documenting the data collected and therapeutic interventions provided in an orthopedic setting. Additionally, coursework in Clinical Orthopedics (PTA 130) will be supported through study of the physiology of tissue healing and repair, arthritis, connective tissue diseases and associated pharmacology.  This is a modular course taking place in the final 7.5 weeks of the semester.

  • PTA 116 - Introduction to the PT Profession

    3 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

    This course provides the student with an orientation to the NCCC’s PTA program’s academic and clinical policies, and an introduction to the field of physical therapy.  Topics include a historical perspective of the field of physical therapy, legal practice standards, professional and ethical behavior, the role of the PTA as part of the health care team, and an orientation to the psychological and social needs of patients and their families. Techniques for effective interaction and intervention between the physical therapist assistant and stakeholders will be emphasized.  Students will be instructed in HIPAA and the rights, dignity and individuality of the patients they encounter.  The role and significance of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Guide 3.0 to Physical Therapy Practice will be examined. Students will learn through participation in community service and/or professional organization activities. The student is also introduced to medical terminology and medical abbreviations in preparation for documentation.

    This lecture course presents the normal anatomy and kinesiology of each of the peripheral joints and the spine. With this foundation, pathophysiological and pathokinesiological factors which may result in musculo-skeletal dysfunction are examined. The course organization parallels that of PTA 131L, in that study of the specific regions of the body for both courses will be sequenced as follows: hip, knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand and head and neck and trunk.

  • PTA 131L - Clinical Orthopedics Lab

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 6 Lab

    This laboratory course requires the physical therapist assistant student to apply the knowledge gained in PTA 112 and PTA 130 to specific regions of the body. Students will gain experience by role-playing the part of the physical therapist assistant and also acting as surrogate patients. Students will engage in extensive laboratory practice in palpation, goniometry, flexibility testing, manual muscle testing, therapeutic exercise, stretching, sensation testing, deep tendon reflex testing and limb length and girth measurement. An overview of selected orthopedic special tests commonly utilized in physical therapy is covered and students are exposed to concepts of joint mobilization. The course organization parallels that of PTA 130 in that study of the specific regions of the body for both courses will be sequenced as follows: spine, hip, knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. Rehabilitation for common orthopedic conditions and observation and correction of postural and gait deviations utilizing stretching and strengthening techniques will be covered. Documentation for the PTA will be studied with emphasis on documenting the data collected and therapeutic interventions provided in an orthopedic setting.

  • PTA 210 - Biophysical Agents

    3 Cr.

    Examines the theory and principles of biophysical therapy modalities and massage.  As a precursor to the application of biophysical agents and massage in the laboratory and clinic, this course covers important aspects of normal physics, and normal and abnormal physiology. Thermoregulation, skin functions and responses, sensory system functions, pain and pain modulation, and circulatory responses are covered. Use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to describe a patient or client’s impairments, activity, and participation limitations and concepts of evidence-based practice are discussed. This is a five-week modular course offered the first five weeks of the semester.

  • PTA 211L - Biophysical Agents Laboratory

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 6 Lab

    In this course, the indications, precautions, contraindications, methods of application and effects of physical therapy modalities are covered. Physical therapist assistant students are provided the opportunity to practice application of therapeutic heat and cold, mechanical traction, external compression, ultrasound and phonophoresis, massage, hydrotherapy, ultraviolet light, electromyographic biofeedback, and the various forms of electric current therapy. Students will experience the modalities as surrogate patients as well. Case studies, and attempts to otherwise simulate the clinical environment are emphasized throughout, as are written documentation of pertinent aspects of these physical therapy interventions and other necessary forms of communication with the patient, physical therapist, and other members of the multi-interdisciplinary team. This is a ten week modular course offered the last ten weeks of the semester.

    This laboratory companion course for PTA 220 provides the student with instruction in physical therapy management of patients with cardiac, vascular, integumentary, pulmonary, and endocrine diagnoses commonly seen in physical therapy clinical practice. The course includes simulated practice of treatment of cardiac and pulmonary patients, burn injuries and other wounds. Additionally, clinical concerns and interventions when working with patients with diabetes, therapeutic exercise protocols, residual limb care, prosthetic application, and functional training for patients with amputation will be addressed.   • PTA 240 - Clinical Medicine II

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lec.

    The content of this course includes the pathophysiological changes resulting from disease processes including the etiology of diseases and disruption of the integrity of bodily functions due to traumatic, immunological, genetic, inflammatory, and degenerative causes. This course emphasizes pathology and pharmacology for diagnoses affecting the neuromuscular systems which are commonly encountered in physical therapy practice, for example, stroke, head injury, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injury. Oncology and changes associated with advanced age are also covered. This course is the final classroom experience for the PTA program. Therefore, composition of resume and cover letters, mock interviews, and a mock licensing exam are included. This is a three week modular course which begins the ninth week of the semester.

    An introductory, interdisciplinary course which studies the essence of astronomical knowledge as a product of man’s application of the “Copernican Principle.” The interplay between science and cultural beliefs and how philosophical and religious beliefs have enhanced or conflicted with scientific principles is discussed. Human activity on Earth and its implication on ecology are compared to other planetary ecologies. Stellar evolution including star birth, Main Sequence stage and stellar demise is discussed with sun as a model star. Recent astronomical findings by many space probes including the Hubble Space Telescope are discussed.

  • PSY 100 - Psychology of Success

    This course is a survey of basic and applied human cognition, metacognition and motivation which will focus on psychological theories and applications designed to improve the performance of students throughout their college careers.  Key topics will include self-assessment and subsequent development of anticipated behaviors (e.g., growth mindset).  In addition, numerous social-cognitive behavior theories will focus on the understanding and promotion of self-efficacy, successful metacognitive strategies, self-regulation, recognition of intrinsically- and extrinsically-motivated behaviors, internal locus of control, self-fulfilling prophecy, stereotype threat, self-perception theory, and cognitive dissonance.  The student will learn how cognitive processes work, what creates accessible learning, and how to employ that knowledge in their own learning activities.  In addition to learning basic theories of motivation, students will identify and evaluate their own motivations and related processes.

    This course will explore the interdisciplinary field of anthrozoology, which is the study of the ways in which human and non-human animals relate to each other and impact each other’s lives.  This course will survey a number of anthrozoological issues from predominantly a psychological frame of reference.  The material has great relevance not only within psychology, but also within disciplines such as Animal Management, Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Human Services, and Sociology.  Primary topics include pet-keeping, developmental and health benefits of pets, animal-assisted therapy, animal abuse and violence toward humans, cognitive ethology, animal rights, and animal welfare.
