  • MUS 210 - Performance Experience IV

    2 Cr.


    This course is a continuation of MUS 209, Performance Experience III. It will enable the music major to participate in small ensemble playing. Students will prepare and perform ensemble musical pieces (duets, trios, quartets etc.) from a variety of historical eras (Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th century). Music will be chosen based on the instrumentation enrolled, ability of the individual players, musical interest of the students and performance opportunities. The course will remain flexible to accommodate the individual performance abilities of students enrolled. The course is open to the non-music major with permission of the Music Coordinator. Students must currently be taking private lesson instruction. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

  • MUS 227 - Introduction to Classical Guitar

    1 Cr.


    This course is an introduction to the repertoire and technical challenges of the classical guitar. Emphasis will be placed on proper right and left hand technique. The study of the Segovia scales, Giuliani arpeggios, Carcassi etudes, and Andrew York’s Seven Discernments will give a basic introduction to tone production, interpretation, and repertoire building. This course is designed to be played on a traditional nylon string classical guitar (supplied by student).

    Pre-Requisites: MUS 125 and MUS 126 or permission of the instructor.

  • MUS 228 - Introduction to Jazz Guitar

    1 Cr.


    This course is an introduction to the basics of jazz guitar. Chord/scale relationships, drop two chordal inversions, navigating changes, analysis of songs, awareness of major figures in the idiom, developing efficient practice habits, and improvisational vocabulary will be explored.

    Pre-Requisites: MUS 125 and MUS 126 or permission of the instructor.

  • MUS 229 - Introduction to Funk Guitar

    1 Cr.


    This course will explore the basics of funk guitar. Emphasis will be placed on the playing styles of New Orleans funk, the music of James Brown, and the music of funk/rock groups. Analysis of playing styles, the role of the guitar in a funk group, and improvisational concepts both chordal and single note ideas will be explored.

    Pre-Requisites: MUS 125 and MUS 126 or permission of the instructor.

The primary goal of this course is to provide an ensemble for the composition and collaborative performance of electronic music. The course will offer students the opportunity to act as researchers, composers, performers, and software developers, with focused attention on instrument design, composition, and music making with the portable computer as instrument. The course will look at how various composers and engineers have addressed the challenges posed by laptop ensembles and brainstorm new approaches. It will explore what kinds of electronic sounds can be created, how the sounds are physically controlled, and how to compose with these sounds. At times the class will divide into smaller groups to teach experience-appropriate skills as needed. Experience with programming languages is not required but will be beneficial. Students must provide their own laptops. (Usually meets Fall and Spring semesters.)

  • NUR 105 - Medication Simulation

    1 Cr.


    This course will provide the student with the opportunity to accurately calculate medication dosage utilizing the label factor method. Medications in simulated clinical situations will be incorporated giving the student experience with the label factor method in a practical setting.

  • NUR 111 - Nursing I

    8 Cr.


    Maslow’s Theory of Hierarchy of Needs and Erickson’s Developmental Theory are presented as a basis of understanding the conditions in which individuals develop as bio psycho social-cultural beings to the fullest degree. The Nursing Process, a problem solving approach, with a focus on assessment is utilized at a beginning level, to identify and meet needs necessary to maintain an optimal level of health. Psychomotor skills are developed, practiced, and evaluated through the use of the College and clinical laboratory. Scientific principles, Nursing Process, and psychomotor skills are correlated throughout the course with subsequent application in the clinical laboratory.

    Restricted to Nursing students. (Usually offered Fall semester.)

  • NUR 112 - Nursing II

    8 Cr.


    NUR 112, Nursing II, focuses on short term interruptions that affect an individual’s ability to meet their needs, as described by Maslow, throughout various developmental stages. The Nursing Process, with emphasis on planning and implementation, will be utilized in assisting the individual to achieve an optimal level of health. Concentration will be on the individual who is experiencing a short term interruption due to surgery or pregnancy. Psychomotor skills will be developed and perfected through the use of the college and clinical laboratory. Theoretical principles and nursing techniques will be correlated throughout the course with subsequent application and evaluation in the clinical laboratory. Student participation in a variety of acute and community health settings provides an overview of the health care delivery system.

  • NUR 130 - Nursing Clinical Practicum

    2 Cr.


    An intensive one week elective that provides reality-oriented nursing practice based upon knowledge and skills accrued by nursing students during previous semesters. This elective course is intended to permit the nursing students the curricular freedom to identify their own unique and personal learning needs and provide experiences to meet these needs under the guidance of a clinical nursing instructor in an acute care hospital setting. This course offers the student the unique exposure to a full day’s shift of clinical experience for a week’s time; thereby allowing for continuity and intensity of clinical learning not provided in other nursing clinical laboratory courses.

    2 Cr.


    The structure and nature of the nursing profession as it relates to today’s society is presented, including: historical perspectives, ethical and legal responsibilities, employment preparation, career opportunities, educational pathways and legislation affecting nursing practice. The content of the pharmacology section of this course is designed to expose the student to an overall view of drugs used for treatment of clinical disorders of patients from all age groups. The course is designed to augment pharmacology knowledge acquired in nursing theory courses and to assist the student in safe clinical practice regarding medication issues. Pertinent information about specific drugs or drug classifications will be discussed, including dosage, interactions, and nursing implications.     Because patient and physician reimbursement from private, state, and federal health insurance depends on accurate diagnostic and procedural coding, this course is an introduction to coding using ICD-9 and CPT-4 coding books. Coding is the translation of medical procedures and diagnoses into a numeric system for expression in the preparation of medical insurance claims. Students will learn how to use numerical designations in place of the usual medical terminology to describe diseases of a patient and medical services and procedures provided by the physician. We will examine the ideas that have shaped the Liberal-democratic state as we know it today and contrast them with the more radical and marginal ideas of communitarians, populists, traditionalists, the religious right, and single-issue political groups. Case studies of environment, culture, and the state will serve as the practical framework against which the basic ideas of political philosophy will be examined and criticized.   • PHI 165 - Philosophy of Art, Beauty and Creativity

    3 Cr.


    Aesthetic experience is the subject matter of this course. The life experience of several great artists as well as our own everyday experience will be explored in order to study the meaning and nature of art, beauty, and creativity. Through enquiry into the nature of painting, poetry, film, music, dance, architecture, and other art forms, we will examine the nature of the arts and their significance for us. Readings will cover several of the more important theories of art from Plato to the present. Meets SUNY General Education requirement for Humanities (H) (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

  • PHI 169 - Philosophy of Religion

    3 Cr.


    This course will cover six major world religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Taoism, and Islam. We will deal with these religions historically, critically and comparatively. Constant reference will be made to comparable and contrasting aspects of each of these religions. A main theme of the course will be to examine the mystical core of each of the religions. Additionally, we will explore the meaning and nature of religious experience. Basic concepts in religious thought will be addressed such as faith, salvation, God, grace, miracles, life after death, healing. We will not deal with institutional doctrine or customs but with the ideas, experiences, and meaning of religious life itself. The focus will be the nature of religious experience especially our own.   • PHL 100 - Phlebotomy I

    1 Cr.


    This course deals with the role of the Phlebotomist in the clinical laboratory setting. Students will gain knowledge of: equipment selection and preparation, asepsis in handling blood and equipment, proper disposal of blood contaminated materials, collection process (capillary and venipuncture), proper labeling, documentation and transport of specimens. Students will be evaluated on performance of procedures and completion of the collection process. Restricted to Phlebotomist students only. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

  • PHL 101 - Phlebotomy II

    2 Cr.


    Topics covered are intravenous and special collection procedures; elderly, home, and long-term care collections; and toxicology and drug testing procedures. Additionally, students will review liability issues; difficult draws and complications; arterial punctures; and the additional duties of a phlebotomist. Lastly, the course offers a Phlebotomy Certification exam review.

    1 Cr.


    This course is designed to practice and learn the dances of countries concentrating on a variety of folk, square and line dances with some application to the principles of movement of Rudolf Laban.  Additionally, elements of creative movement and dance will be explored.  Topics covered include historical, geographical and cultural influences upon folk and square dance, terminology, mechanics of various individual and group steps, rhythm patterns, movement concepts and teaching strategies.  Additional attention is paid to the proper instruction of skill progression, partner and small group episodes, common missteps and their corrections and differentiated instruction.

    Emphasis will be on learning proper technique for performance of select tumbling skills.  Individual skills will be taught in progression of difficulty so that students are able to combine them into performance routines in the men’s and women’s floor events.  Also covered will be demonstration routines.  Additional attention is paid to the proper instruction of skill progression, partner and small group drills, common missteps and their corrections, and differentiated instruction.

    This course is designed to encourage participants to develop greater self-confidence and at the same acquire a sense of trust and commitment to their classmates.  Students are given the opportunity to test themselves against physical and emotional limits through exploration of a series of group and personal challenges to attain higher levels of performance. The curriculum is connected to participant’s ability to appreciate the application of experiences to the entire Physical Education curriculum.  Experiences include: initiatives, trust activities, team building experiences, problem solving and cooperative games.  Additional attention is paid to the proper instruction of skill progression in spotting techniques, partner and small group episodes, common misunderstandings and their corrections, and differentiated instruction.

    1 Cr.


    The Sport Analysis course is designed to prepare students on the basics of analyzing sports movement or technique utilizing digital video analysis and Dartfish Sports Video Software and hardware. Students will be able to demonstrate an introductory understanding of the software and hardware processes used to shoot, capture, analyze and distribute digital video using Dartfish video software. The vocabulary/language associated with the use of digital video and the sports industry will give students a broad knowledge of terms associated with this computer application.     Designed for a beginning bowler or one with limited knowledge and skills. The course stresses the mechanical principles involved in the approach and the techniques of spot bowling for strikes and spares. Topics covered include equipment, related terminology, etiquette and safety factors, scoring, four-step approach, delivery, aiming, and making spares and splits. Students taking this course should have an average of below 130. There is a $37 lab fee for this course. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

    Provides the student with an understanding of the muscular system and how weight training methods are taught that will enable a student to design a personal program for a lifetime of fitness.
