SOC 270 - Community Studies

3 Cr.
Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

To study community is to study people living in and identifying with a particular place and to give special attention to the type, quality, and basis of their interaction. Such a broad definition includes much of the subject matter of sociology, so it is not surprising that community theory and research have played a major role in the development of American Sociology. Sociology has at its core a foundation for understanding community. Urbanization and urban growth have occurred more rapidly during the 19th and 20th centuries than in any other period. The globe is changing from a predominately rural world to one where the majority of us live in urban places. This is a survey course in that a broad perspective of community studies is covered. This includes recognizing the rural past, historical changes over time and place, and current trends through sociological theory and research.
Offered Fall and Spring semesters
Pre-Requisites: ENG 099 or waiver through testing
General Education: Meets SUNY requirement for Social Science (SS)
