The Career

The tourism industry in the Niagara Region continues to grow, and the demand for tourism professionals is increasing. This program is a collaborative effort between the business, hospitality and recreation curricula. Graduates may opt for self-employment or may obtain positions in many different settings including: hotels, country clubs, casinos, restaurants, cruise ships, airports and resorts. The hospitality industry has a strong demand for tourism. Those interested in tourism must have strong management skills to succeed in this labor-intensive service-driven business.

The NCCC Approach

The Tourism Management certificate is a one-year academic program that includes four courses specific to operations in this field. The coursework will provide students with an overview of the industry as well as specific skills designed to meet the needs of employers. This will provide them with a full complement of the skills needed in the business of tourism management.

This program is designed to meet the needs of the student in taking the first steps toward a career in the tourism industry as well as those currently employed in the field who are seeking academic credentials to further enhance their career opportunities. The class sizes are small and personal attention to each student’s academic needs is addressed.


Students admitted in September and January.

Program Goals and Objectives

  • To provide students with the basic knowledge of the tourism industry that will prepare them for employment in independent hotels, cruise lines, casinos and resorts.

Student Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this program, students will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the tourism industry
  • Explain and utilize marketing and branding techniques in the industry
  • Employ management principles in the tourism environment
  • Apply the foundations of recreation to the tourism industry
  • Analyze the marketing mix and apply it to essential advertising techniques
  • Appraise consumer behavior along with the psychographics to determine the target market for the tourism industry
  • Utilize business communication skills in the tourism arena

Program Requirements (TMC)

  1. A total of at least 33 credit hours with a minimum curriculum grade-point average of 2.0. Academic Foundations courses do not count toward the certificate. 
  2. Hospitality: A minimum of 12 credit hours to include:
    HOS 101 - Introduction to the Hospitality Industry 
    HOS 111 - Event Planning 
    HOS 131 - Introduction to the Tourism Industry 
    HOS 204 - Convention & Meetings Management 
  3. Business: A minimum of 9 credit hours to include:
    BUS 114 - Consumer Behavior 
    BUS 135 - Fundamentals of Advertising 
    ___  ___    Business elective to be chosen from HOS or CAS prefixed courses OR
  4. Humanities: A minimum of 3 credit hours to include:
    ENG 101 - Writing I 
  5. Office Technology/Computer: A minimum of 6 credit hours to include:
    BUS 229 - Business Communications 
    CIS 105 - Introduction to Operating Systems 
    CIS 109 - Introduction to Database 
    CIS 111 - Introduction to Word Processing 
  6. Health/Physical Education: A minimum of 3 credit hours to include:
    REC 200 - Foundations of Recreation
