Course Description Change - Effective Fall 2026

          CRJ 101 - Introduction to Criminal Justice

          Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

          This course constitutes an overview of the criminal justice system and its historical development, as well as how it currently exists and operates at the national, state, and local levels.                        Although primarily a descriptive course, opportunities to discuss casual and concomitant variables of criminal behavior at a general level will be utilized to demonstrate relevancy to peripheral            program courses and to indicate the relationship between this and subsequent courses within the curriculum. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

          Meets SUNY requirements for Social Sciences (SOCS)

          CRJ 102 - Criminal Law and Procedures

          Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

          This course constitutes an overview of the criminal and procedural laws that have undergone immense shifts since the 1960s. This course will focus upon the large body of doctrine under the            Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eight Amendments. A traditional casebook approach is utilized for the study of key cases in criminal procedure, supplemented with historical background,                                explanations of doctrinal development in the law, and discussions of social science relevant to criminal procedure. (Usually offered fall and spring semesters.)

          This course provides an introduction into the theories of criminology. It is meant to be a retrospective exposition of human’s struggle for an insight into the problem of crime and a hint of its                perspectives and prospects.  (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters)

          MAT 108 - Mathematics for Childhood Education I

          Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

          This course is designed specifically for students interested in being a childhood education teacher (PK - 6). The course will instruct students on how to teach mathematical concepts to their                future students. Students in this course will study the mathematical reasoning and learn the methods to teach elementary mathematics. This course is not intended to teach the mechanics,                but the reasons and methods behind the mechanics. Topics include how to teach problem solving; how to teach elementary set theory; how to teach whole numbers; how to teach functions;              how to teach numeration and computations; how to teach number theory; how to teach integers; how to teach fractions and rational numbers; and how to teach decimals and real numbers.                Focus is on the methods, reasoning behind the methods, and the ability to explain why and how the mathematics works. Students are expected to be fluent in all mathematical topics                         covered. (Usually offered Fall semester days and Spring semester evenings).

          MAT 109 - Mathematics for Childhood Education II

          Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

          This course is designed for the liberal arts student who is interested in childhood education, and is the continuation of MAT 108: Mathematics for Childhood Education I.  Students will study                elementary mathematics’ topics (PK-6) to include: statistics, probability, geometric figures, measurement, transformations, symmetries, congruence, similarity, and coordinate geometry. The              purpose of this course is not strictly mechanics, but rather the focus is on the methods and explanations of the topics in mathematics. The intent is to have the students be able to teach the                methods and explain the reasoning behind the topics to their future students.  (Usually offered spring semester days and fall semester evenings)

          MAT 255 - Linear Algebra

          Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

          Students will study the basics of linear algebra. Linear Algebra is about linear combinations. That is, using arithmetic on columns of numbers called vectors and arrays of numbers called                    matrices, to create new columns and arrays of numbers. Linear algebra is the study of lines and planes, vector spaces and mappings that are required for linear transforms. Topics include                systems of linear equations, matrices, determinants, vector spaces, linear transformations, inner product spaces, eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

 

Course Description Change - Effective Fall 2026

          ENG 088 - Integrated Reading and Writing

          Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.   

This is an integrated reading and writing (IRW) course designed to provide opportunities for students to develop and exercise critical thinking skills in reading and writing. The IRW course stresses engagement with texts by examining readings to develop writing skills such as thesis development, paragraph organization, revision, sentence structure, punctuation skills, and vocabulary. Extensive reading is designed to build strategies for note-taking skills, comprehension, and analyzing arguments. Emphasis is also placed on writing that reflects a variety of rhetorical approaches including compare/contrast and cause and effect.

Placement in the course is according to current guidelines. If ENG 088 and ENG 101 are taken concurrently as an ALP course, a combination of essay assignments for both ENG 088 and ENG 101 will be completed and the student must pass both courses. Failure to pass either course will result in the failure of both.

Credits apply only to the College’s academic foundations requirement. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

 

Course Description Change - Effective Summer 2026

          HED 201 - Healthful Living

          Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

          This course explores current health and wellness topics - such as substance use, nutrition, sexuality, stress, and disease prevention - while examining how race, class, gender, and social                  systems shape identity, access, and equity. Students will evaluate and apply social justice principles to health-related decision-making, with the goal of promoting inclusive and equitable                    health outcomes for the individual and allied communities. (Usually offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters)

SUNY General Education Approved Course - Effective Summer 2026

          TUS 101 - Introduction to Tuscarora Language

          Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

          This course is a study of the structure of the Tuscarora language and the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This course serves as an introduction to       the culture of the Tuscarora Nation.

          Meets SUNY requirements for World Language (WLNG)

          ECE 200 - Early Childhood Education Internship

          Contact Hours Per Week: 1 Lec., 9 Internship

          This course provides students with an opportunity to apply their academic learning in early childhood education with real-life experiences in settings where they will engage with young                        children, families, and early professionals in the field. Using evidence-based teaching and learning approaches, students will plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally-appropriate                    practices and culturally-response instruction. A minimum of 135 hours of supervised work in a preschool or child care setting is required. Students who will pursue the Childhood Development            Associate (CDA) credential must be employed in a state-approved early childhood education setting.  (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

          Pre-requisites that may be met concurrently:  ECE 250 Birth to Age 6

          ECE 220 - Career Portfolio Development

          Contact Hours Per Week: 1 Lec.

          This capstone course is designed to introduce the fundamentals of portfolio development and is the capstone course for the Early Childhood Studies Certificate. A portfolio is a collection of                student work that allows students to reflect on their own progress and create a tool that demonstrates a student’s skills and learning progress. Students refine their accomplishments, create              professional identities, develop résumés, and learn interviewing skills.  (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

          Pre-requisites that may be met concurrently:  ECE 250 Birth to Age 6

          MAT 230 - Discrete Mathematics

          Contact Hours Per Week: 4 Lec.

          This course is designed for students who plan to major in mathematics or computer science.  Topics include logic, number theory, methods of proof, mathematical induction, counting                          techniques and graph theory.  (Usually offered Fall semester).
