SOC 203 - Social Problems

The sociology of social problems explores how a situation becomes defined as a social problem and how social problems can be analyzed and understood using the methods of sociology. Major theoretical perspectives in sociology are introduced and applied to the empirical study of social problems, including analysis of several major social problems in contemporary society. Special emphasis is given to understanding the linkages among social problems, how social problems arise from the “normal” conditions of society, and how human social problems pose an increasing threat to the earth and its supporting biosphere and ecosystems. The historical context of the development of social problems is examined and the potential for solutions to social problems is explored.

Pre-Requisites: ENG 099, AAC 042, ENG 088, or waiver through the college’s placement assessment
