MUS 261 - Experimental Music Lab III1 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lab
This course is a continuation of MUS 160‚ Experimental Music Lab‚ II. The primary goal of this course is to provide an ensemble for the composition and collaborative performance of electronic music. The course will offer students the opportunity to act as researchers, composers, performers, and software developers, with focused attention on instrument design, composition, and music making with the portable computer as instrument. The course will look at how various composers and engineers have addressed the challenges posed by laptop ensembles and brainstorm new approaches. It will explore what kinds of electronic sounds can be created, how the sounds are physically controlled, and how to compose with these sounds. At times the class will divide into smaller groups to teach experience-appropriate skills as needed. Experience with programming languages is not required but will be beneficial. Students must provide their own laptops. Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters
