The Career

Digital Media has become an integral part of life in the 21st century. Companies big and small rely on the web and e-commerce to grow their markets and compete as never before on a global scale. Practitioners in this field combine creativity and technology to produce interactive media for sales, marketing, training, education and entertainment. CDs, DVDs, websites, blogs, podcasts, wikis, video streaming, video gaming systems, and mobile devices — digital media developers need the knowledge, skills and creativity to develop engaging interactive content for all these platforms. The NCCC Digital Media certificate program prepares you for a career in this exciting field; one that can lead to employment as a multimedia producer, website developer, project manager, interactive media specialist, video producer and editor or digital audio specialist, to name just a few of the career options.

The NCCC Approach

The certificate program is an intensive 31-credit-hour program that concentrates on the acquisition of skills used in the digital creation of web-based content, interactive media and video and audio productions. This program is ideal for someone who has already earned a degree or is working in a related field and would like to update his or her skills. Due to the progression of the courses, this certificate program can best be completed on a part-time basis over four semesters.

Students choose to follow one of three tracks: Web Developer, Multimedia Production or Digital Video and Audio, depending on their career goals.

Students in the Web Developer track gain practical experience in the planning, creation and maintenance of a website. This includes the design and layout of websites that incorporate graphic images, animation, forms, databases and interactive multimedia components. Students will learn to code websites using HyperText Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and Adobe Dreamweaver. They will also use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash and ActionScript to create multimedia elements and interactivity.

Students in the Multimedia Production track learn how to use multimedia authoring software to create interactive multimedia content for web sites, CD-ROM and DVD. Students also gain an understanding of digital video and audio and its integration with multimedia products. Students use Adobe Flash, ActionScript and Photoshop to create multimedia elements and interactivity.

Students in the Digital Video and Audio track learn the practical skills and production techniques to produce video and audio content for distribution on traditional and new media platforms including TV, radio, web streaming, audio and video podcasting, DVDs, CDs, computers and portable multimedia devices. Students use Final Cut Studio and DigiDesign Pro Tools to create sophisticated video and audio projects.

The Digital Media program strives to provide students with the skills and knowledge to be successful in an ever-changing technology-based industry by emphasizing adherence to industry standards, encouraging creativity and developing students’ capacity for life-long learning.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the certificate program in Digital Media, a graduate will be able to:

  • Identify digital media technologies and their use in the creation of digital media content.
  • Demonstrate the application of design principles in the development of digital media content.
  • Digitize and electronically manipulate audio, video, and graphic images.
  • Create a digital portfolio or demo reel of his/her work.

Depending on student’s career track, he/she will be able to:

  • Develop an interactive multimedia project using appropriate software and hardware.
    OR
  • Design and develop a web site using current standards for coding
    OR
  • Produce, edit and package a video project for digital distribution.

Facilities

Digital Media students have access to two state-of-the-art digital media computer classrooms (Macintosh and Windows PC). In addition students have access to a fully digital, high-definition TV studio with green screen and virtual set capabilities and digital audio recording and video production/editing facilities.

Software

The following software programs are used in the Digital Media program:

  • Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, Flash and Dreamweaver.
  • Apple Final Cut Studio including Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Color, Compressor and DVD Studio Pro.
  • Apple iLife Suite including iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand and iPhoto
  • DigiDesign Pro Tools
  • Microsoft Word, Access and PowerPoint
  • Web 2.0 tools such as Google Docs, Jing, Wetpaint

Minimum Degree Requirements (DM)


Students entering the Digital Media program must be proficient in the use of Macintosh and/or Windows computers.

Students must choose either the Multimedia Production Track, the Web Developer Track or the Digital Video and Audio Track.

  1. A total of at least 31 credit hours with a minimum curriculum gradepoint average of 2.0. Academic Foundations courses do not count toward the degree.
