The Career
The TESOL Jointly Registered program is designed to give students the knowledge, skills and experiences that will prepare them for transfer to Niagara University’s baccalaureate program. It provides the foundation to become certified in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in grades K-12. Opportunities for employment in this certification area remain high. There is a need to hire many TESOL teachers during the coming years to keep up with projected teacher vacancies and the rising number of students in need of these services.
The NCCC Approach
When students graduate from NCCC’s TESOL program, they will have the knowledge, skills and general background necessary for transfer to Niagara University to complete a bachelor of arts degree to be eligible for certification to teach TESOL grades K-12 in New York State. While at NCCC, students will experience small class sizes which encourage open, in-depth discussions; build close relationships with other students and allow faculty to devote more attention to individual students. Students will participate in approximately 60 hours of field placement experiences in TESOL classrooms during their education courses. The program also emphasizes related course work in liberal arts and sciences as required by Niagara University. Students in this program will receive individual advisement by faculty who have a special interest and expertise in education.
Admission
Students admitted in fall, spring and summer.
The Liberal Arts and Sciences: TESOL program is offered as a full-time day program or part-time evening program. Because of the sequencing of courses, it may take longer than eight semesters to complete the part-time evening program or four semesters to complete the full-time day program if a student begins in a spring or summer semester.
Program Goals and Objectives
- To prepare NCCC students for seamless transfer into the Bachelor of Arts degree program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at Niagara University
- To provide a mechanism to share resources and program goals across faculty of the two institutions
- To provide the opportunity for first generation college students, many of who are from rural areas, to consider teaching as a career
- To encourage teachers to consider careers in rural areas of New York State
- Broaden his/her general education background and core knowledge through course work in humanities, social sciences, mathematics, fine arts, computer technology and sciences
Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge about the sociological, philosophical, physiological, historical and psychological aspect of American education
- Develop a philosophy about education and the role education plays in American society
- Successfully complete field experiences which fulfill the required clock hours
- Describe the certification necessary for TESOL and the employment potential
- Begin preparation in the development of skills and accumulation of knowledge which leads to certification
- Discuss characteristics which define responsible and successful education
