ANT 216 - The Paranormal World: Investigations into Parapsychological Anthropology

3 Cr.

This course is an introduction to the study of paranormal phenomena and their influence on human behavior and cultures worldwide.  Students will acquire and demonstrate a cross-cultural understanding of paranormal belief and experiment including ESP, psycho kinesis, apparitions and haunting, spirit possession and related phenomena.  Students will evaluate data, both quantitative and qualitative, based upon research by parapsychologists and anthropological field workers.  A critical assessment of near death studies and reincarnation research will also be a prominent feature of the course.  Students will integrate this knowledge with an intensive study of an anthropologically known culture in which paranormal beliefs and experience have deeply influenced both the culture’s development and individual expression.  Meets SUNY General Education Requirement for Social Sciences (SS).
