ANT 102 - Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

3 Cr.
Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

This course examines humans as a social organism who uses cultural behaviors as our main way to adapt to the challenges of an ever changing global environment. We look at the enormous variety of human social arrangements that make each culture unique, but seek out the underlying principles and common features of social life and social organization everywhere. Students will examine and actively demonstrate their knowledge of human language, non-verbal communication, marriage and kinship systems, economics and exchange institutions. Similarly, students will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of how different societies organize themselves politically and to maintain social control, to provide for a religious and spiritual life, and use art and aesthetic values as an enhancement and as an essential component of social life. Students will also be able to apply their understandings to the study of how processes of globalization and social interconnectedness are affecting indigenous peoples and complex societies alike.
Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters
General Education: Meets SUNY requirement for Other World Civilizations (OW)
