The Career

The Western New York (WNY) region boasts one of the stronger manufacturing regions in the US and in particular process manufacturing of various chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food products.  WNY has maintained the strength of long standing well-established existing process manufacturing and is realizing additional growth in manufacturing through new companies and expanding of existing companies. 

Manufacturing and in particular process manufacturing has evolved over the decades to where production personnel need to be highly skilled in several technical areas well above what is learned at a high school level.  WNY is a large manufacturing area of the US where there is a shortfall of candidates that have the needed skills to function in advanced manufacturing environments.  In Niagara County, manufacturing is the third largest industry and in adjacent Erie County it is the second.

The NCCC Approach 

The Industrial Process Technology program at NCCC emphasizes the skills in various technological fields to prepare the student for the highly technical skills needed to function in the process manufacturing environment.  The students will develop a full understanding of industrial systems to prepare them for a career in industrial manufacturing using electronics, instrumentation, robotics, mechanics, as well as hydraulics and pneumatics.  All courses start at the beginning phase and segue into application-level of fully automated technology.  The program is designed to prepare the students for immediate careers in process manufacturing.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, students will:

  • Program and control robots
  • Apply machining procedures to fabricate metal components to drawing specifications
  • Calculate and/or graph mechanical and electrical applications by applying mathematics, utilizing spreadsheets, or manipulating equipment and instrumentation
  • Analyze circuits and calculate applications of electrical principles
  • Examine the basic principles of chemistry and apply the knowledge to applications
  • Examine the basic principles of Physics and apply the knowledge to applications
  • Create technical drawings that apply to the manufacturing field
  • Design mechanical applications such as weldments, power train, and machine components
  • Communicate project information through written methods
  • Recognize hazards in the workplace and operate in a safe manner
