  • NUR 130 - Nursing Clinical Practicum

    2 Cr.


    An intensive one week elective that provides reality-oriented nursing practice based upon knowledge and skills accrued by nursing students during previous semesters. This elective course is intended to permit the nursing students the curricular freedom to identify their own unique and personal learning needs and provide experiences to meet these needs under the guidance of a clinical nursing instructor in an acute care hospital setting. This course offers the student the unique exposure to a full day’s shift of clinical experience for a week’s time; thereby allowing for continuity and intensity of clinical learning not provided in other nursing clinical laboratory courses.

    Restricted to Nursing students. (Offered Summer session.)

  • NUR 132 - College Success: Nursing

    The student’s success in college is increased by assisting the student in obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary to reach his/her educational objectives. The following topics will be addressed as they relate to student success within the Nursing curriculum: Orientation to College and the Nursing Curriculum; Time Management; Study Skills; Library/Research Skills for the Nursing Major; Communication/Verbal and Non-Verbal in the Nursing Major; Careers in Nursing; and Stress Management.

  • NUR 211 - Nursing III

    10 Cr.


    Nursing III is a study of needs and related nursing care in various age groups when common recurring interruptions occur in ability to meet need for oxygen, fluid and electrolyte balance, rest and activity (orthopedic), and safety and security (neurological). Included is a component specific to the special needs of children. The Nursing Process, with emphasis on analysis and goal setting is utilized. Psychomotor skills will be developed and assessed through the use of the College, Clinical Laboratory, and Simulation Lab.  Theoretical principles and nursing techniques will be correlated throughout the course with subsequent application and evaluation in the clinical laboratory.  The Simulation Lab will be used to apply theoretical principles and nursing techniques.  A variety of clinical experiences in acute, pediatric and community based agencies provide for correlation of theory and practice and provide an overview of the health care delivery system.  Restricted to Nursing students (Offered Fall semesters.)

  • NUR 212 - Nursing IV

    10 Cr.


    Nursing IV is a continuation of Nursing III. Emphasis is placed on commonalities of needs and nursing care which arise in various age groups when common recurring interruptions occur in needs related to protective mechanisms, (cancer), sexuality, nutrition, elimination, and higher level needs. Long term goals and the evaluation step of nursing process are emphasized. Medical-surgical, psychiatric, and oncological nursing experiences are provided in local agencies.   • NUR 213 - Nursing Perspectives

    2 Cr.


     The structure and nature of the nursing profession as it relates to today’s society is presented, including: historical perspectives, ethical and legal responsibilities, employment preparation, career opportunities, educational pathways and legislation affecting nursing practice. Additionally, patient advocacy, health care delivery patterns, nursing informatics, performance/quality improvement initiatives, concepts of management, research utilization, role transition and professional nursing organizations are also presented.

  • NUR 232 - Intra-Operative Nursing Practicum

    2 Cr.


    An intensive one week elective that provides reality-oriented nursing practice in the intra-operative phase of peri-operative nursing based upon knowledge and skills accrued by nursing students during previous semesters. This elective course is intended to familiarize the nursing students with the multiple roles of the RN in the operating room, provide experiences in the operating room utilizing acquired skills under the guidance of a clinical nursing instructor and preceptor in the intra-operative hospital setting. This course offers the student the unique exposure to a full day’s shift of clinical surgical experience for a week’s time; thereby allowing for continuity and intensity of clinical learning not provided in other nursing clinical laboratory courses.

    Restricted to Nursing students who have successfully completed NUR 211. (Usually offered Interim session, in January.)

  • NUR 237 - Health Assessment

    3 Cr.


    Designed to expand the nurse’s knowledge, skills and techniques in eliciting a health history; performing physical assessments; recognizing normal and deviations from normal; and recording data accurately, concisely and clearly. The emphasis is on the skill of performing a systematic health assessment of adults and children, incorporating developmental principles and socio-cultural aspects. Restricted to Nursing students or graduate nurse.  (Usually offered Fall semester.)

  • OFT 100 - Keyboarding on the PC

    1 Cr.


    Designed to provide ‘touch typing’ competency skills for the nonprofessional keyboarding student. Instruction in basic alphanumeric keyboarding techniques on the microcomputer. Intended for students seeking data entry skills on the personal computer; keyboard mastery and accuracy will be the primary emphasis of this course. Geared for those at any level of computer training who wish to learn touch-keyboarding skills. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

  • OFT 101 - Keyboarding/WP Applications I

    2 Cr.


    Designed for the nonprofessional keyboarding student who has no prior keyboarding experience. Basic instruction in alphanumeric keyboarding techniques on the microcomputer for the student seeking data entry skills will be taught to provide “touch typing” competency. In addition, word processing software will be used to format and print basic business correspondence; simple reports will be introduced. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

  • OFT 121 - Professional Keyboarding I

    3 Cr.


    Development of basic touch keyboarding skills and knowledge necessary for the operation and care of the personal computer. Students shall apply this keyboarding skill and knowledge to the typing of letters, memos, and one page manuscripts. Required minimum keyboarding speed is 30 net words per minute for three minutes. A minimum of seven such timings is necessary for successful completion of OFT 121. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

  • OFT 122 - Professional Keyboarding II

    3 Cr.


    Preparation of business letters, tabulations, manuscripts and business forms; reinforcement of basic keyboarding skills and production ability to achieve speed and accuracy. Required minimum keyboarding speed is 40 net words per minute for five minutes. A minimum of ten such timings is required for successful completion of OFT 122. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

    Pre-Requisites: OFT 121 with a C average, or advanced placement.

  • OFT 132 - Medical Records Management

    2 Cr.


    The medical record, in manual or automated form, houses the medical information that describes all aspects of patient care and also serves to protect the legal interests of the patient, health care provider, and health care facility. The medical assistant is responsible for the organization of a records management system for patient files, correspondence, financial records, equipment manuals, and all other necessary business documents. Students will not only examine the purpose and content of various medical records but also learn how to develop an efficient records management system for the filing, retrieval, transferring, protection, retention, storage, and destruction of a variety of patient records in the health care field.     2 Cr.


    The building of writing skills for medical professions ; methods of transmitting messages through written, oral, verbal, and electronic media. Areas of study include writing fundamentals (grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, letter and report formatting) ; letter writing, memorandum writing ; report writing ; employment techniques ; and communications psychology.     This course includes an in-depth look of the procedures the administrative assistant will be expected to perform upon entering the world of work : office organization and environment, time and task management, public relations, records and information management, equipment and supplies, and handling incoming and outgoing communication.   • OFT 164 - Medical Transcription

    3 Cr.


    This course is designed to prepare medical assistant and administrative assistant professional (medical office management focus) students for entry-level positions as medical transcriptionists and/or medical word processors. Students are prepared to transcribe a variety of authentic medical documents within the framework of the major medical specialties through the use of a textbook/tape resource package. Listening, language, and keyboarding skills will be integrated to produce accurate medical documents. (Usually offered Fall semester.)

  • OFT 230 - Medical Coding, Billing and Insurance

    4 Cr.


    In this course the student will learn to enter data into the computer and perform computerized account management duties.  Students will use a medical practice management software program to schedule patient appointments, create superbills, post patient charges and payments, produce patient ledgers, complete insurance claim forms, prepare daily deposit slips, age accounts receivable and compile a variety of reports.  Students will be introduced to coding using ICD-9 and CPT-4 coding books. 

    Students will learn how to use numerical designations in place of the usual medical terminology to describe diseases of a patient and medical services and procedures provided by the physician.  Usually offered Spring semester

  • PHI 155 - Political Philosophy: Community, Culture and State Power

    This course will explore the political relationship between what it means to be a free individual, a member of a community, and a citizen of a Federal state. In the enquiry we will define how these political relationships shape our understanding of crucial issues concerning the environment, culture, and social power. The philosophical context of the course will grow out of readings about fundamental political ideas that shape thought and action in contemporary politics. We will examine the ideas that have shaped the Liberal-democratic state as we know it today and contrast them with the more radical and marginal ideas of communitarians, populists, traditionalists, the religious right, and single-issue political groups. Case studies of environment, culture, and the state will serve as the practical framework against which the basic ideas of political philosophy will be examined and criticized.     This course will cover six major world religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Taoism, and Islam. We will deal with these religions historically, critically and comparatively. Constant reference will be made to comparable and contrasting aspects of each of these religions. A main theme of the course will be to examine the mystical core of each of the religions. Additionally, we will explore the meaning and nature of religious experience. Basic concepts in religious thought will be addressed such as faith, salvation, God, grace, miracles, life after death, healing. We will not deal with institutional doctrine or customs but with the ideas, experiences, and meaning of religious life itself. The focus will be the nature of religious experience especially our own.     This course will explore the nature of love as a unique human phenomenon and in its relationship to sexuality.  The exploration will cover love’s vaious manifestations in terms of the experiences of desire, intimacy and compassion.  The course will be structured as an introductory level philosophy course, familiarizing the students with the questions of the nature of being, the problem of knowledge and the role of values in determining our understanding and experience of love.  Both the Platonic and Freudian traditions will be utilized to conceptualize and problematize the erotic phenomenon.     This course deals with the role of the Phlebotomist in the clinical laboratory setting.     Designed for a beginning bowler or one with limited knowledge and skills. The course stresses the mechanical principles involved in the approach and the techniques of spot bowling for strikes and spares. Topics covered include equipment, related terminology, etiquette and safety factors, scoring, four-step approach, delivery, aiming, and making spares and splits.     1 Cr.


    Provides the student with review of the muscular system and details how alternative resistance training methods will illicit desired responses from the body.  The course includes the use of medicine balls, exercise balls, resistance bands, TRX, BOSU balls and other applicable cutting-edge equipement.  Safe use of equipment will be covered in addition to proper warm-up, stretching and cool-down methods.  This course should be considered as an alternative to PED 155 for those students who will go on to utilize these advanced techniques in a professional setting.  (Usually offered Fall and Spring smesters)

  • PED 275 - Lifeguard Training with Advanced First Aid

    3 Cr.


    Focuses on the skills, techniques, and knowledge needed by students to achieve certification by the American Red Cross for a Lifeguard Training certificate. Waterfront Lifeguard Training is also included. It will also prepare Professional Rescuer, which includes AED training. It also emphasizes the importance of a safe, healthy lifestyle, and a student as a caregiver in First Aid and as a CPR knowledge to prevent lifestyle related injuries or related injuries or related illnesses. American Red Cross guidelines and sanctions are adhered to. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

    Pre-Requisites: Student will be able to swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl (100 yards) and breaststroke (100 yards) followed by a choice of either (100 yards); student will be able to swim 20 yards, submerge, retrieve a 10 lb. brick off the pool floor, return 20 yards keeping both hands on the brick (supine position, no goggles permitted for this portion), and finally exit the pool without the assistance of steps or a ladder in under 100 seconds.     The course is divided into three parts: mathematical computations used in basic science courses; physics: Newton’s Laws of Motion, work, energy, and levers.     1 Cr.


    This course provides the foundations necessary for Clinical Orthopedics. Common orthopedic assessment procedures utilized in physical therapy, as well as documentation of the collected data are introduced. The assessment procedures include manual muscle testing, goniometry, gross screening versus definitive testing of sensory status, and deep tendon reflexes. Basic theories, principles and methods of therapeutic exercise and stretching will also be covered. As additional foundations for Clinical Orthopedics, the physiology of tissue healing and repair, arthritis, connective tissue diseases and associated pharmacology will be discussed.   • PTA 116 - Introduction to the PT Profession

    2 Cr.


    This course provides the student with an orientation to the NCCC’s PTA program’s academic and clinical policies, and an introduction to the field of physical therapy. Topics include a historical perspective of the field of physical therapy, state practice acts, medical-professional ethics and conduct, the role of the PTA as part of the health care team, and an orientation to the psychological and social needs of patients and their families. Techniques for effective interaction and intervention between the physical therapist assistant and the patient will be emphasized. Students will be instructed in HIPAA and the rights, dignity, and individuality of the patients they encounter. The role and significance of the American Physical Therapy Association, the ADA, and the Guide to Physical Therapy Practice will be examined. This is a 10 week modular course which takes place during the first 10 weeks of the semester.

    This lecture course presents the normal anatomy and kinesiology of each of the peripheral joints and the spine. With this foundation, pathophysiological and pathokinesiological factors which may result in musculo-skeletal dysfunction are examined. The course organization parallels that of PTA 131L, in that, study of the specific regions of the body for both courses will be sequenced as follows: spine, hip, knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand.

    This laboratory course requires the physical therapist assistant student to apply the knowledge gained in PTA 112 and PTA130 to specific regions of the body. Students will gain experience by role-playing the part of the physical therapist assistant and also acting as surrogate patients. Students will engage in extensive laboratory practice in palpation, goniometry, flexibility testing, manual muscle testing, therapeutic exercise, stretching, sensation testing, deep tendon reflex testing, and limb length and girth measurement. An overview of selected orthopedic special tests commonly utilized in physical therapy is covered, and students are exposed to concepts of joint mobilization. The course organization parallels that of PTA130 in that study of the specific regions of the body for both courses will be sequenced as follows: spine, hip, knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. Rehabilitation for common orthopedic conditions, and observation and correction of postural and gait deviations utilizing stretching and strengthening techniques will be covered. Documentation for the PTA will be studied with emphasis on documenting the data collected and therapeutic interventions provided in an orthopedic setting.

  • PTA 150 - Clinical Practicum I

    3 Cr.


    This initial clinical exposure will provide students with hands-on application of the skills acquired during the first academic year of the program. Students are assigned to a clinical facility, typically in Western New York, at the discretion of the academic clinical coordinator of education, and dependent upon the availability of clinical sites. Students will complete 4 weeks of full-time (37 hours/week) clinical education. Supervision is provided directly by either licensed physical therapists or certified physical therapist assistants employed at the clinical site. (Usually offered Summer Session II.)

  • PTA 210 - Physical Agents

    2 Cr.


    Examines the theory and principles of physical therapy modalities. As a precursor to the application of physical agent modalities, massage and electrotherapy in the laboratory and clinic, this course covers important aspects of normal and abnormal physiology. Thermoregulation, skin functions and responses, sensory system functions, pain and pain modulation, and circulatory responses are covered. Methods of classifying health and wellness consistent with the APTA’s Guide to Physical Therapy Practice are also covered. This is a 10 week modular course offered the first 10 weeks of the semester.

  • PTA 211L - Physical Agents Laboratory

    2 Cr.


    In this course, the indications, precautions, contraindications, methods of application and effects of physical therapy modalities are covered. Physical therapist assistant students are provided the opportunity to practice application of therapeutic heat and cold, mechanical traction, external compression, ultrasound and phonophoresis, massage, hydrotherapy, ultraviolet light, electromyographic biofeedback, and the various forms of electric current therapy. Students will experience the modalities as surrogate patients as well. Case studies, and attempts to otherwise simulate the clinical environment are emphasized throughout, as are written documentation of pertinent aspects of these physical therapy interventions and other necessary forms of communication with the patient, physical therapist, and other members of the multi-interdisciplinary team. This is a 10 week modular course offered the last 10 weeks of the semester.

  • PTA 221L - Clinical Medicine I Laboratory

    1 Cr.


    This laboratory companion course for PTA220 provides the student with instruction in physical therapy management of patients with cardiac, vascular, integumentary, pulmonary, and endocrine diagnoses commonly seen in physical therapy clinical practice. The course includes simulated practice of treatment of cardiac and pulmonary patients, burn injuries and other wounds. Additionally, clinical concerns and interventions when working with patients with diabetes, therapeutic exercise protocols, residual limb care, prosthetic application, and functional training for patients with amputation will be addressed. This is a five week modular course which begins the eleventh week of the semester.

    Topics for this course include historical perspectives on delivery of health care, clinic operations management, delegation and supervision, policies and procedures, performance appraisal, quality assurance/continuous quality improvement, and reimbursement issues such as the uninsured and underinsured, Medicare, Medicaid, Worker’s Compensation and commercial insurance. Includes current issues and trends in physical therapy such as continuing competency, specialty certification for physical therapists, and possibilities for recognition for the PTA with exceptional experience or skills.

    The physical therapist assistant student will be exposed to activities and techniques to utilize when working with pediatric patients, including basic handling and facilitation of movement in the developmental sequence. Students will learn about the influence of typical and atypical primitive reflexes on posture and movement, righting and equilibrium responses, and abnormal balance responses and coordination. Opportunities to practice interventions to alleviate difficulties with motor control will be emphasized. This is a three week modular course which begins at the start of the semester.

    Knowledge of motor learning and motor control gained from PTA230 and PTA 231 will be developed as more in-depth theory, principles, and practices of physical therapy pertinent to patients with neuromuscular conditions are studied. Topics include: specialized interventions and philosophies for treatment of patients with neuropathology and subsequent disorders of movement, accessibility, environmental assessment, and specialty wheelchair applications. This is a four week modular course which begins the 8th week of the semester.

  • PTA 240 - Clinical Medicine II

    2 Cr.


    The content of this course includes the pathophysiological changes resulting from disease processes including the etiology of diseases and disruption of the integrity of bodily functions due to traumatic, immunological, genetic, inflammatory, and degenerative causes. This course emphasizes pathology and pharmacology for diagnoses affecting the neuromuscular systems which are commonly encountered in physical therapy practice, for example, stroke, head injury, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injury. Oncology and changes associated with advanced age are also covered. This course is the final classroom experience for the PTA program. Therefore, composition of resume and cover letters, mock interviews, and a mock licensing exam are included. This is a 3 week modular course which begins the ninth week of the semester.

  • PTA 310 - PTA Clinical Education III

    5 Cr.


    This last clinical education course, which consists of two, four-week, full-time (40 hours/week) clinical education experiences will build upon PTA Clinical Education I and II, as well as all of the PTA practices and seminar courses. Assignments are arranged at the discretion of the academic coordinator of clinical education to ensure exposure to a variety of clinical settings. However, placement is dependent upon the availability of clinical sites. Students will be supervised by licensed physical therapists and/or certified physical therapist assistants in the clinical setting. Upon successful completion of this third clinical education course, the physical therapist assistant graduate will be competent to practice as a physical therapist assistant and will be eligible for certification. (Usually offered Summer session.)
