SSC 111 - Gender, Sexuality and Culture

3 Cr.
Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

Through an interdisciplinary lens using psychological, sociological, historical, queer, feminist, poststructural, anthropological, and cultural studies perspectives we will explore the role that gender plays in society (the macro level) and our everyday lives (the micro level).  This course seeks to analyze and discuss gender as a historical, contextual, and intersectional concept that lies at the crossroads of race, class, sexuality, citizenship, age, size, and ability. We will explore the status of women and men in today’s society using race, class, sexual orientation, and religion. Students will examine the social institutions and cultural representations affecting gender today by taking a brief look at how both men and women’s roles have been socially and culturally constructed.
Usually offered Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters
