Through a study of service strategies based on current theory and practice, this course is designed to provide a solid foundation in critical thinking, communication, and behavior management skills necessary to provide basic direct support services in a variety of settings such as child/day care centers, personal care, elder care, or independent living facilities. The course reviews client needs and services and identifies the skills and attitudes required of the effective direct support professional. Students may bring varied levels of understanding and experiences; therefore, an emphasis is placed on basic principles of critical thinking, problem solving, ethics in the helping profession, and cultural sensitivity to encourage self-reflection as a competent helper.
