	MUS 173 - Music Notation with Sibelius 3 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec. This course is a hands-on introduction to Sibelius Music Notation Software. Students will receive instruction on computer and Sibelius basics, including score creation, copying and editing, MIDI transcription, advanced playback features, and part preparation. Emphasis will be on learning keyboard shortcuts and defining personal house styles to improve the look and function of the students’ scores, as well as the speed at which they create them. A basic understanding of musicianship, computers, and musical notation is needed. Recommended for Audio Recording Production and Music majors. 	MUS 190 - Critical Listening and Acoustics 3 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec. A lecture-demonstration course, Critical Listening and Acoustics will introduce the student to all the elements that make up a successful recording. From initial considerations of the recording environment, through differences in instrument types and microphone types, to various techniques for recording directly versus acoustical pick-up of the sound source, the student will gain knowledge of current techniques and practices and understand what the cause and effect relationships are. Through evaluating current master recordings, ear-training drills, and first-hand experience of various acoustical environments the student will learn how to identify critical elements of sound, effects, and balance in recordings. 	MUS 191 - Electronic Music and MIDI 3 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 1 Lec., 4 Lab A lecture-demonstration-laboratory-performance operation course. The content areas include equipment, all aspects of MIDI Production from pre-production through post-production. 	MUS 192 - Audition Preparation 1 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab Music majors preparing for transfer are faced with the daunting task of preparing an audition. This course will investigate the issues of performance and will focus on audition material and presentation skills for successful placement into academic or professional venues. Students will refine repertoire appropriate for their instrument and use recordings, video, and reflection to make improvements to their repertoire. This course is designed to teach auditioning skills for those students auditioning for music or musical theatre departments at four-year universities. 	MUS 197 - History of Rock Music and Culture 3 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec. This course is a survey of the history of rock music and culture from its origins in the rhythm & blues and country/western music traditions of the early 20th century through its many subgenres to the present. Special attention will be given to the production and consumption of rock music within historical, cultural and technological contexts. The course will reveal how rock music as an art form is situated at the nexus of popular culture and the commercial marketplace. It is unnecessary for students to be able to play, compose or read music for this course. It gives students the opportunity to learn techniques, vocabulary, and repertoire of playing in a jazz combo. Arranging tunes, improvisation, group interplay and dynamics, song form, trading fours, and tone production will be covered. The Jazz Combo is open to the non-majors as well as music majors. 	MUS 237 - Jazz Combo IV 1 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lab This course is a continuation of Jazz Combo III. It gives students the opportunity to learn the techniques, vocabulary, and repertoire of playing in a chamber jazz. Arranging tunes, improvisation, group interplay and dynamics, song form, trading fours, and tone production will be covered. Entering students must have playing experience on their instrument, and be able to play two octave major scales, and have at least a basic reading ability. The Jazz Combo is open to the non-majors as well as music majors. Students must provide their own instruments. 	MUS 242 - Conducting 2 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 1 Lec., 2 Lab The objective of this course is to introduce the student to the basics of conducting proficiency, terminology, and score study. Conducting technique, posture, preparatory gestures, the ictus, eye contact, meters, releases, fermatas, styles, dynamics, hand autonomy, cues, entrances, baton technique, repertoire, and rehearsal procedure will be explored. Experience with programming languages is not required but will be beneficial. Students must provide their own laptops. 	MUS 271 - Research in Music 3 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec. This course introduces the music major or highly interested lay person to the concepts of research and writing in music, music education, and/or music therapy, as a professional in the field. Students will select a particular topic of interest and complete a semester-long investigation of the topic. Students will produce three major documents by completion: a research bibliography, a career-oriented research paper, and a topical research-based paper. The link between research and the professional music career will be stressed as knowledge informs practice. 	NUR 100 - Practical Nursing I 8 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 4 Lec. NUR 100, Practical Nursing I, focuses on the fundamentals of nursing, introducing principles of nursing practice and knowledge, while identifying basic patient-centered care for individuals across the life span. The student identifies the conditions in which individuals develop as bio-psycho-social-cultural beings and begins to use communication in therapeutic environments. The Nursing Process, a problem solving approach, with a focus on data gathering is utilized at a beginning level, to identify and meet needs necessary to maintain an optimal level of health. Psychomotor skills are developed, practiced and assessed for competency through the use of college and clinical laboratory. Scientific principles, Nursing Process and psychomotor skills are correlated throughout the course with subsequent application in the clinical laboratory, with a concentration on care of older adults. 	NUR 101 - Practical Nursing II 8 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 4 Lec. NUR 101 - Practical Nursing II, focuses on developing competent nursing practice while identifying interruptions that affect the ability of individuals at various ages to meet their basic needs. Students deliver patient-centered care with emphasis on prioritization, planning, implementation, and health teaching to assist individuals and families with self-care to achieve an optimal level of health within the practical nurse scope of practice. Clinical concentration focuses primarily on individuals during the maternity and perioperative experience. Psychomotor skills are developed and assessed for competency through the use of the College, Clinical Laboratory, and Simulation Lab. Theoretical principles and nursing techniques are correlated throughout the course with subsequent application and evaluation in the clinical laboratory. The Simulation Lab is used to apply theoretical principles and nursing techniques. Student participation in a variety of acute and community health settings provides an overview of the health care delivery system. 	NUR 113 - Practical Nursing III 6 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec. Practical Nursing III is a study of needs and related nursing care of individuals in various age groups experiencing interruptions in their ability to meet needs for oxygen, rest, activity, safety and security. Included is a component specific to the special needs of children. The nursing process and critical thinking skills are utilized to develop a framework of care. 	PHI 155 - Political Philosophy: Community, Culture and State Power 3 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec. This course will explore the political relationship between what it means to be a free individual, a member of a community, and a citizen of a Federal state. In the enquiry we will define how these political relationships shape our understanding of crucial issues concerning the environment, culture, and social power. The philosophical context of the course will grow out of readings about fundamental political ideas that shape thought and action in contemporary politics. We will examine the ideas that have shaped the Liberal-democratic state as we know it today and contrast them with the more radical and marginal ideas of communitarians, populists, traditionalists, the religious right, and single-issue political groups. Issues of environment, culture and the state will serve as the practical framework against which the basic ideas of political philosophy will be examined and criticized. Classical ideas such as liberty, equality and fraternity will permeate lecture and discussion. These will in turn be critically mediated by contemporary concepts, ideas and theories in thought. The course will address the mechanical principles involved in the approach, release techniques and techniques of spot bowling for strikes and spares. Topics covered include equipment, related terminology, etiquette and safety factors, scoring, four-step approach, delivery, aiming, and making spares and splits. 	PED 148 - Zumba 1 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab Zumba is a dance-fitness class that combines fast and slow rhythms from Latin and international music. The class adheres to a specific interval pacing formula, maximizing caloric output and body toning using easy steps and high energy music. Students will learn basic principles of aerobic, interval, and calisthenic training to maximize caloric output, cardiovascular benefits, and total body toning. Students will be introduced to basic anatomy, kinesiology and exercise physiology. No dance experience necessary. Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab A practical study of the modern derivatives of early history fighting arts, and the evolution of martial arts from its roots in ancient Asian cultures to its present applications. Students will compare and contrast such martial arts styles as kung fu, karate and ju jitsu with their derivatives such as self-defense tactics and mixed martial arts. Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab Provides the student with review of the muscular system and details how alternative resistance training methods will illicit desired responses from the body. The course includes the use of medicine balls, exercise balls, resistance bands, TRX, BOSU balls and other applicable cutting-edge equipment. Safe use of equipment will be covered, in addition to proper warm-up, stretching and cool-down methods. This course should be considered as an alternative to PED 155 for those students who will go on to utilize these advanced techniques in a professional or competitve setting. 	PED 275 - Lifeguard Training with Advanced First Aid 3 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lec., 2 Lab This course focuses on the skills, techniques, and knowledge needed by students to achieve certification from the American Red Cross in Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer (which includes AED training for adults and children). The course emphasizes the importance of a safe, healthy lifestyle, as well as the knowledge to prevent lifestyle related injuries or related illnesses on and off the job. American Red Cross guidelines and sanctions are adhered to in the development and instruction of this course. Usually offered Spring semester Pre-Requisites: Student will be able to swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl (100 yards) and breaststroke (100 yards) followed by a choice of either (100 yards); student will be able to swim 20 yards, submerge, retrieve a 10 lb. brick off the pool floor, return 20 yards keeping both hands on the brick (supine position, no goggles permitted for this portion), and finally exit the pool without the assistance of steps or a ladder in under 100 seconds.
