This course is a survey of basic and applied human cognition, metacognition and motivation which will focus on psychological theories and applications designed to improve the performance of students throughout their college careers.  Key topics will include self-assessment and subsequent development of anticipated behaviors (e.g., growth mindset).  In addition, numerous social-cognitive behavior theories will focus on the understanding and promotion of self-efficacy, successful metacognitive strategies, self-regulation, recognition of intrinsically- and extrinsically-motivated behaviors, internal locus of control, self-fulfilling prophecy, stereotype threat, self-perception theory, and cognitive dissonance.  The student will learn how cognitive processes work, what creates accessible learning, and how to employ that knowledge in their own learning activities.  In addition to learning basic theories of motivation, students will identify and evaluate their own motivations and related processes.
