OFT 134 - Coding For Medical Insurance

2 Cr.

Because patient and physician reimbursement from private, state, and federal health insurance depends on accurate diagnostic and procedural coding, this course is an introduction to coding using ICD-9 and CPT-4 coding books. Coding is the translation of medical procedures and diagnoses into a numeric system for expression in the preparation of medical insurance claims. Students will learn how to use numerical designations in place of the usual medical terminology to describe diseases of a patient and medical services and procedures provided by the physician. (Usually offered Spring semester.)

Pre-Requisites: BIO 213 and MED 134 OR BIO 117 and MED 134 or permission of the instructor.
Co-Requisites: Co-requisite: BIO 214
