SPE 102 - Public Speaking

3 Cr.
Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

This course introduces students to the principles and practice of effective public speaking. Emphasizing both theory and performance, students will learn to research, organize, outline/write, and deliver a variety of speeches (introduction, informative, persuasive, and special occasion) in a variety of modes (manuscript, memorized, extemporaneous, impromptu) for diverse audiences and contexts (classroom, lecture hall, conference room, theatre, video-recorded, and/or live, online videoconferencing). Through guided practice, peer feedback, and critical analysis of public discourse, students will develop confidence, clarity, and competence as speakers. Topics include audience analysis, speech organization, verbal and nonverbal delivery, listening skills, ethics in communication, and the use of visual aids.
