    This course is a continuation of MUS 240: All College Choir III. A vocal ensemble devoted to performing choral literature. This ensemble will focus on choral styles, vocal production, and will perform several times each semester on- and off-campus.

  • MUS 242 - Conducting

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 1 Lec., 2 Lab

    The objective of this course is to introduce the student to the basics of conducting proficiency, terminology, and score study. Conducting technique, posture, preparatory gestures, the ictus, eye contact, meters, releases, fermatas, styles, dynamics, hand autonomy, cues, entrances, baton technique, repertoire, and rehearsal procedure will be explored. Students will have opportunity to conduct in class, rehearsal, and/or performance venues as well as to attend local performances.

  • MUS 248 - Rock Band III

    A continuation of Rock Band II (MUS147). Students will learn concepts, and methodologies necessary to manage all aspects of participating in a Rock band. Instruction emphasizes exploration of various forms of musical expression in an effort to develop the band’s voice and style. Students will also be introduced to the principles and practices of creative production and be shown opportunities to study performance, sound design, and music production.   • MUS 271 - Research in Music

    3 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

    This course introduces the music major or highly interested lay person to the concepts of research and writing in music, music education, and/or music therapy, as a professional in the field. Students will select a particular topic of interest and complete a semester-long investigation of the topic. Students will produce three major documents by completion: a research bibliography, a career-oriented research paper, and a topical research-based paper. The link between research and the professional music career will be stressed as knowledge informs practice.

  • NUR 100 - Practical Nursing I

    8 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 4 Lec.

    NUR 100, Practical Nursing I, focuses on the fundamentals of nursing, introducing principles of nursing practice and knowledge, while identifying basic patient-centered care for individuals across the life span. The student identifies the conditions in which individuals develop as bio-psycho-social-cultural beings and begins to use communication in therapeutic environments. The Nursing Process, a problem solving approach, with a focus on data gathering is utilized at a beginning level, to identify and meet needs necessary to maintain an optimal level of health. Psychomotor skills are developed, practiced and assessed for competency through the use of college and clinical laboratory. Scientific principles, Nursing Process and psychomotor skills are correlated throughout the course with subsequent application in the clinical laboratory, with a concentration on care of older adults.

  • NUR 101 - Practical Nursing II

    8 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 4 Lec.

    NUR 101 - Practical Nursing II, focuses on developing competent nursing practice while identifying interruptions that affect the ability of individuals at various ages to meet their basic needs. Students deliver patient-centered care with emphasis on prioritization, planning, implementation, and health teaching to assist individuals and families with self-care to achieve an optimal level of health within the practical nurse scope of practice. Clinical concentration focuses primarily on individuals during the maternity and perioperative experience. Psychomotor skills are developed and assessed for competency through the use of the College, Clinical Laboratory, and Simulation Lab. Theoretical principles and nursing techniques are correlated throughout the course with subsequent application and evaluation in the clinical laboratory. The Simulation Lab is used to apply theoretical principles and nursing techniques. Student participation in a variety of acute and community health settings provides an overview of the health care delivery system.

    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lec.

    This course focuses on the areas needed to successfully enter the Registered Nurse program at the level of NUR 211. Additional scope of practice and professional issues will be fostered, advanced clinical skills will be demonstrated and successfully mastered. The concept of theoretical care planning will be introduced with the student achievement measured by the development of a complete theoretical plan.   • NUR 130 - Nursing Clinical Practicum

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 0.5 Lec., 2.5 Lab

    An intensive one week elective that provides reality-oriented nursing practice based upon knowledge and skills accrued by nursing students during previous semesters. This elective course is intended to permit the nursing students the curricular freedom to identify their own unique and personal learning needs and provide experiences to meet these needs under the guidance of a clinical nursing instructor in an acute care hospital setting. This course offers the student the unique exposure to a full day’s shift of clinical experience for a week’s time; thereby allowing for continuity and intensity of clinical learning not provided in other nursing clinical laboratory courses.

    An intensive one week elective that provides reality-oriented nursing practice in the intra-operative phase of peri-operative nursing based upon knowledge and skills accrued by nursing students during previous semesters.     This course will explore the political relationship between what it means to be a free individual, a member of a community, and a citizen. We will consider how these relationships shape our understanding of crucial issues concerning our environment, culture, and social power. The philosophical context of the course will grow out of readings about fundamental political ideas that shape thought and action in contemporary politics. We will examine major theories about the source of political authority including social contract theory, liberalism, and Marxism. We will consider the implications of each theory on the proper scope of and limits on government power, the structure of political institutions, the rationale for violent and peaceful revolutions, just war theory, and the role of groups and individuals in society.

    This course will cover six major world religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Taoism, and Islam. We will deal with these religions historically, critically and comparatively. Constant reference will be made to comparable and contrasting aspects of each of these religions. A main theme of the course will be to examine the mystical core of each of the religions. Additionally, we will explore the meaning and nature of religious experience. Basic concepts in religious thought will be addressed such as faith, salvation, God, grace, miracles, life after death, and healing. We will not deal with institutional doctrine or customs but with the ideas, experiences, and meaning of religious life itself. The focus will be the nature of religious experience especially our own.

    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab

    Designed for beginning bowlers or ones with limited knowledge and skills. The course will address the mechanical principles involved in the approach, release  techniques and techniques of spot bowling for strikes and spares. Topics covered include equipment, related terminology, etiquette and safety factors, scoring, four-step approach, delivery, aiming, and making spares and splits. Students of all ability levels will enjoy this course.  Sport Video Technology will be incorporated in teaching and improvement of the basic bowling techniques.  There is a lab fee for this course.

  • PED 135 - Adventure Education

    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab

    This is an activity course designed to encourage participants to develop greater self confidence and at the same time acquire a sense of trust and commitment to their classmates. Students are given the opportunity to test themselves against physical and emotional limits through exploration of a series of group and personal challenges to attain higher levels of performance. Experiences include initiatives, trust activities, team building experiences, and the low and high challenge ropes course.

    Provides the student with a review of proper warm-up, stretching, and cool-down methods.   • PED 148 - Zumba

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab

    Zumba is a dance-fitness class that combines fast and slow rhythms from Latin and international music. The class adheres to a specific interval pacing formula, maximizing caloric output and body toning using easy steps and high energy music. Students will learn basic principles of aerobic, interval, and callisthenic training to maximize caloric output, cardiovascular benefits, and total body toning. Students will be introduced to basic anatomy, kinesiology and exercise physiology.  No dance experience necessary.

    Provides the student with an understanding of the muscular system and how weight training methods are taught that will enable a student to design a personal program for a lifetime of fitness.     Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab

    A practical study of the modern derivatives of early history fighting arts, and the evolution of martial arts from its roots in ancient Asian cultures to its present applications.  Students will compare and contrast such martial arts styles as kung fu, karate and ju jitsu with their derivatives such as self-defense tactics and mixed martial arts. Brief lectures will be combined with physical hands on training and students will become proficient in the basic skills that are common to these styles.

  • PED 255 - Advanced Weight Training

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lab

    Provides the student with review of the muscular system and details how alternative resistance training methods will illicit desired responses from the body. The course includes the use of medicine balls, exercise balls, resistance bands, TRX, BOSU balls and other applicable cutting-edge equipment. Safe use of equipment will be covered, in addition to proper warm-up, stretching and cool-down methods. This course should be considered as an alternative to PED 155 for those students who will go on to utilize these advanced techniques in a professional or competitive setting.

  • PED 275 - Lifeguard Training with Advanced First Aid

    3 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 2 Lec., 2 Lab

    This course  focuses on the skills, techniques, and knowledge needed by students to achieve certification from the American Red Cross in Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer (which includes AED training for adults and children). The course emphasizes the importance of a safe, healthy lifestyle, as well as the knowledge to prevent lifestyle related injuries or related illnesses on and off the job. American Red Cross guidelines and sanctions are adhered to in the development and instruction of this course.

    Pre-Requisites: Student will be able to swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl (100 yards) and breaststroke (100 yards) followed by a choice of either (100 yards); student will be able to swim 20 yards, submerge, retrieve a 10 lb. brick off the pool floor, return 20 yards keeping both hands on the brick (supine position, no goggles permitted for this portion), and finally exit the pool without the assistance of steps or a ladder in under 100 seconds. (By permission of instructor).

  • PTA 112L - Physical Therapy Foundations Laboratory

    1 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lab

    This course provides content and practice that will prepare students for Clinical Orthopedics Lab (PTA131L).  Common tests and measures the PTA may perform within selected interventions in the physical therapist’s plan of care are introduced.  The course includes a brief introduction to manual muscle testing, goniometry, testing of sensory status and deep tendon reflexes.   Basic theories, principles and methods of therapeutic exercise and stretching are covered.  Demonstration and practice of the fundamentals are included.  Beginning documentation, in SOAP format, will be studied with emphasis on documenting the data collected and therapeutic interventions provided in an orthopedic setting. Additionally, coursework in Clinical Orthopedics (PTA 130), will be supported through study of the physiology of tissue healing and repair, arthritis, connective tissue diseases and associated pharmacology.  This is a modular course taking place in the final 7.5 weeks of the semester.

  • PTA 116 - Introduction to the PT Profession

    3 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

    This course provides the student with an orientation to the NCCC’s PTA program’s academic and clinical policies, and an introduction to the field of physical therapy.  Topics include a historical perspective of the field of physical therapy, legal practice standards, professional and ethical behavior, and the role of the PTA as part of the health care team.  Techniques for effective interaction between the physical therapist assistant and stakeholders will be emphasized.  Students will be instructed in HIPAA and the rights, dignity, and individuality of the patients they encounter, as well as the significance of the ADA.  The role and importance of the American Physical Therapy Association will be examined. Through self-study, the student is also introduced to medical terminology and medical abbreviations in preparation for documentation.  Students must complete a minimum of 45 hours of observation in a physical therapy clinic.

    This lecture course presents the normal anatomy and kinesiology of each of the peripheral joints and the spine.  With this foundation, pathophysiologic and pathokinesiologic factors which may result in musculo-skeletal dysfunction are examined.  The course organization parallels that of PTA 131L, in that, study of the specific regions of the body for both courses will be sequenced as follows:  hip, knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand and head, neck and trunk.

  • PTA 131L - Clinical Orthopedics Lab

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 6 Lab

    knowledge gained in PTA 112 and PTA 130 to specific regions of the body. Students will gain experience by role-playing the part of the physical therapist assistant and also acting as surrogate patients. Students will engage in extensive laboratory practice in palpation, goniometry, flexibility testing, manual muscle testing, therapeutic exercise, PROM, stretching, sensation testing, deep tendon reflex testing, limb length and girth measurement. An overview of selected orthopedic special tests commonly utilized in physical therapy is covered. Students learn joint-specific arthrokinematics, capsular patterns, and resting positions as a foundation to grade I and II peripheral joint mobilization, which is covered in PTA 211L. The course organization parallels PTA 130 in that study of the specific regions of the body for both courses will be sequenced as follows: hip, knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, and spine.  Interpreting and adhering to the PT plan of care for rehabilitation of common orthopedic conditions, and observation and correction of postural deviations utilizing stretching and strengthening techniques will be covered. Documentation for the PTA will be studied with emphasis on documenting the data collected and therapeutic interventions provided in an orthopedic setting.

  • PTA 150 - Clinical Practicum I

    4 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 12 Lab

    This initial clinical exposure will provide students with hands-on application of the skills acquired during the first academic year of the program. Students are assigned to a clinical facility, typically in Western New York, at the discretion of the Director of Clinical Education, and dependent upon the availability of clinical sites. Students will complete six weeks of full-time (37-40 hours/week) clinical education. Supervision is provided directly by either licensed physical therapists or certified physical therapist assistants employed at the clinical site.

    This course examines the theory and principles of biophysical therapeutic agents and massage.  As a precursor to the application of biophysical agents and massage in the laboratory and clinic, this course covers important aspects of physics, and normal and abnormal physiology. Thermoregulation, skin functions and responses, sensory system functions, pain and pain modulation, and circulatory responses are covered. Use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to describe a patient or client’s impairments, activity, and participation limitations and concepts of evidence-based practice are discussed. This is a five-week modular course offered the first five weeks of the semester.

  • PTA 211L - Biophysical Agents Laboratory

    2 Cr.
    Contact Hours Per Week: 6 Lab

    In this course, the indications, precautions, contraindications, methods of application and effects of biophysical agents are covered.  Physical therapist assistant students are provided the opportunity to practice application of therapeutic superficial and deep thermal agents, cryotherapy, traction, external compression, ultrasound and phonophoresis, massage, hydrotherapy, light therapies, electromyographic biofeedback, and the various forms of electrotherapeutic agents.  Students will experience the modalities as surrogate patients as well.  Case studies, and attempts to otherwise simulate the clinical environment are emphasized throughout, as are written documentation of pertinent aspects of these physical therapy interventions and other necessary forms of communication with the patient, physical therapist, and other members of the interprofessional team.  Observation of gait and correction of gait deviations utilizing stretching and strengthening techniques will also be covered.  Students will also practice basic peripheral joint mobilizations.  This is a 10-week modular course offered the first 10 weeks of the semester.

    This laboratory companion course for PTA 220 provides the student with instruction in physical therapy management of patients with cardiac, vascular, integumentary, pulmonary, endocrine, oncologic, and pelvic floor diagnoses commonly seen in physical therapy clinical practice.  The course includes simulated practice of treatment of cardiac and pulmonary patients, burn injuries and other wounds including clinical concerns and interventions when working with patients with wounds associated with diabetes.  Additionally, clinical concerns and interventions when working with patients with diabetes, therapeutic exercise protocols, residual limb care, prosthetic application, and functional training for patients with amputation will be addressed. This is a five-week modular course which begins the eleventh week of the semester.

    The content of this course includes the pathophysiological changes resulting from disease processes including the etiology of diseases and disruption of the integrity of bodily functions due to traumatic, immunological, genetic, inflammatory, and degenerative causes. This course emphasizes pathology and pharmacology for diagnoses affecting the neuromuscular systems which are commonly encountered in physical therapy practice, for example, stroke, head injury, multiple sclerosis, vestibular disorders, and spinal cord injury. Changes associated with advanced age are also covered. This course is the final classroom experience for the PTA program.  Therefore, composition of resume and cover letters, mock interviews, and a mock licensing exam are included.  This is a 5 week modular course which begins the sixth week of the semester.
