New Courses - Effective Spring 2024

CHE 105 - Chemistry in Pop Culture, 3 Cr.

Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

This course will delve into the fascinating intersection of chemistry and pop culture!  Students will learn scientific literacy skills to understand and critically evaluate scientific information used and misused throughout pop culture.  Topics will include the scientific method, discerning fact from fiction, logical fallacies, and an introduction to chemistry principles through class discussions, multimedia analysis, and critical thinking exercises.  This course is a Liberal Arts elective.

ENG 088 - Integrated Reading and Writing, 3 Foundational Cr.

Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

This is an integrated reading and writing (IRW) course designed to provide opportunities for students to develop and exercise critical thinking skills in reading and writing. The IRW course stresses engagement with texts by examining readings to develop writing skills such as thesis development, paragraph organization, sentence structure, punctuation skills, and vocabulary. Extensive reading is designed to build strategies for note-taking skills, comprehension, and analyzing arguments. Emphasis is also placed on writing that reflects a variety of rhetorical approaches including compare/contrast and cause and effect.

Placement in the course is according to current guidelines. If ENG 088 and ENG 101 are taken concurrently as an ALP course, a combination of essay assignments for both ENG 088 and ENG 101 will be completed and the student must pass both courses. Failure to pass either course will result in the failure of both.

Credits apply only to the College’s academic foundations requirement. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)
