Police Basic Training Courses - Effective Fall 2022
PBT 100 - Laws of New York State, 3 Cr.
Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.
The course introduces the student to the pre-employment Police Basic Training Course in New York State. The course is authorized by the New York State Code of Rules and Regulations (9 CRR-NY 6020) and is presented in the form prescribed in that same code (9 CRR-NY 6026). This course summarizes the laws of the State of New York, focusing on the Penal Law, NY State Juvenile Law, NY State Criminal Procedure Law, and legal authorizations for the use of physical and deadly physical force. Students must be accepted to the current Police Academy class in order to register for the course.
PBT 105 - Introduction to Law Enforcement, 3 Cr.

The course introduces the student to law enforcement practices in New York State and the United States. The course is authorized by the New York State Code of Rules and Regulations (9 CRR-NY 6020) and is presented in the form prescribed in that same code (9 CRR-NY 6026). The course covers an overview of U.S. and NY State Constitutional Law, discretionary powers of police, ethics and professionalism, procedural law and justice, an overview of criminal justice principles and procedures, and the principles of investigation. Students must be accepted to the current Law Enforcement Training Academy class in order to register for the course.

The course introduces the student to law enforcement practices in New York State and the United States. The course is authorized by the New York State Code of Rules and Regulations (9 CRR-NY 6020) and is presented in the form prescribed in that same code (9 CRR-NY 6026). The course covers the practice of physical fitness relative to being a police officer. Students must be accepted to the current Law Enforcement Training Academy class in order to register for the course.

The course introduces the student to law enforcement practices in New York State and the United States. The course covers police basic traffic procedures, including vehicle and traffic law, vehicle stops and traffic enforcement, traffic control, and emergency vehicle operation. Students must be accepted to the current Law Enforcement Training Academy class in order to register for the course.

The course introduces the student to law enforcement practices in New York State and the United States. The course covers police defensive tactics and principles of control. Students must be accepted to the current Law Enforcement Training Academy class in order to register for the course.

The course introduces the student to law enforcement practices in New York State and the United States. The course covers emergency medical services in the policing environment. Students must be accepted to the current Law Enforcement Training Academy class in order to register for the course.

The course introduces the student to law enforcement practices in New York State and the United States. The course is authorized by the New York State Code of Rules and Regulations (9 CRR-NY 6020) and is presented in the form prescribed in that same code (9 CRR-NY 6026). The course covers police patroling principles and practices, including DWI detection, standardized field sobriety testing, arrest processing, report writing, electronic communications, and professional communications. Students must be accepted to the current Law Enforcement Training Academy class in order to register for the course.

The course introduces the student to law enforcement practices in New York State and the United States. The course is authorized by the New York State Code of Rules and Regulations (9 CRR-NY 6020) and is presented in the form prescribed in that same code (9 CRR-NY 6026). The course covers police community services, including victim and witness services, elder abuse, cultural diversity, sexual harassment, persons with disabilities, crime control strategies, and crime prevention. Students must be accepted to the current Law Enforcement Training Academy class in order to register for the course.
PBT 140 - Police Investigations, 3 Cr.

The course introduces the student to law enforcement practices in New York State and the United States. The course is authorized by the New York State Code of Rules and Regulations (9 CRR-NY 6020) and is presented in the form prescribed in that same code (9 CRR-NY 6026). The course covers police investigations, including investigations into the following types of cries : domestic violence, basic crash management, injury and death, sex crimes, narcotics and dangerous drugs, missing/abducted children, missing adults, animal abuse, human trafficking, and standardized responses to unusual events. Students must be accepted to the current Law Enforcement Training Academy class in order to register for the course.
PBT 145 - Crisis Intervention Skills and Officer Wellness, 3 Cr.

The course introduces the student to law enforcement practices in New York State and the United States. The course is authorized by the New York State Code of Rules and Regulations (9 CRR-NY 6020) and is presented in the form prescribed in that same code (9 CRR-NY 6026). The course covers fundamental crisis intervention skills for law enforcement, intoxication, and officer wellness. Students must be accepted to the current Law Enforcement Training Academy class in order to register for the course.
