SPE 101 - Speech Communication3 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.
This foundational course provides the student with a practical introduction to theories and practices of competent communication. Emphasis is placed upon understanding the general principles in relation to intrapersonal, interpersonal, and public communication. Students will learn how verbal and nonverbal communication strategies impact the communication process and the receiver’s interpretation of a message. With an emphasis on audience-centered speaking, students will be provided the opportunity to research, outline, develop and deliver oral speeches in an online or face-to-face setting. Course content includes: the human communication process, verbal and nonverbal communication, understanding the self and others, listening, ethical communication, and; organizing and presenting effective informative and persuasive speeches.
