New Course - Effective Fall 2024

ART 131 - Digital Design, 3 Cr.

Contact Hours Per Week: 6 Lab.

Digital Design covers the creation and manipulation of visual content using a range of software tools to communicate ideas, concepts, and information effectively across a range of digital platforms. Through a combination of lectures, research, hands-on projects, and group critique, students will learn the fundamentals of graphic design, composition, digital imaging, typography, and layout for digital display. Projects will emphasize the application of core design principles to modern digital practices using industry-standard software. By the end of the course, students will have experience problem-solving content creation to generate visually compelling designs, giving them the foundational knowledge for a range of careers in graphic design, digital media, and web design.

MUS 175, 176, 275, 276 - Applied Music Lessons I - IV, 1 Cr.

Contact Hours Per Week: 1 Lec.

This course is for first semester music students.  Credit will be granted for the individual study of voice or instrument.  Students will need to attend weekly 1-hour individual music lessons.  Lessons will be scheduled the first week of the semester based on student and teacher availability.  Primary topics with include history of the student’s instrument, musicianship, technique, performance practice, scales, arpeggios, and repertoire.

HUS 260 - Fundamentals of Training in the Helping Professions, 1 Cr.

Contact Hours Per Week: 1 Lec.

Too often, what we learn ends when we leave the training session. How can we prepare to embrace and practice what is learned? This course offers an overview of the purpose and scope of effective training and the challenges that provide lasting positive results that support the ethics and competency standards established by helping professions associations. Key topics include relevance, impact, coaching, consistency, and reinforcement of what was learned.

HUS 261 - Supervision in the Helping Professions, 1 Cr.

Contact Hours Per Week: 1 Lec.

This course is an overview of the role of supervisor in the helping professions. Moving into a position of leadership and authority can be one of the most difficult transitions to make in the workplace. In addition to the new challenges you face and high expectations you must meet, it is imperative that you learn how to effectively communicate, motivate and delegate to achieve success as defined by professional ethics and competency standards. We will explore the blend between models, theories and principles related to leadership and practical techniques for successful supervision. We will also explore the values and ethics that bind us as professionals. This course is appropriate for new supervisors, those considering supervision in the helping professions, or experienced supervisors wanting to learn more about supervision in the helping professions.

BUS 229 - Business Communications

Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

This course will familiarize the study of written and oral communication skills for business and the professions.  Course content will include writing fundamentals (grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure); letter and report formatting; letter, memo and report writing; oral presentations; employment strategies; and communication psychology.  (Usually offered Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.)

       NUR 112 - Nursing II

       Contact Hours Per Week: 4 Lec., 2 Lab, 6 Clinical

       NUR 112, Nursing II, focuses on developing competent nursing practice while identifying interruptions that affect the ability of individuals at various ages to meet their basic needs. Students               deliver patient-centered care with emphasis on prioritization, planning, implementation, and health teaching to assist individuals and families with self-care to achieve an optimal level of health.         Clinical concentration focuses primarily on individuals during the maternity and perioperative experience. Psychmotor skills are developed and assessed for competency through the College,           Clinical Laboratory, and Simulation Lab. Theoretical principles and nursing techniques correlate throughout the course, with subsequent application and evaluation in the clinical laboratory. The         Simulation Lab is used to apply theoretical principles and nursing techniques. Student participation in a variety of acue and community health settings provides an overview of the health care           delivery system. (Offered spring semester. Restricted to nursing students.) 

       Prerequisites: NUR 111, MAT 113, BIO 213, BIO 213L, PSY 110

CHE 121 - General Chemistry II

This is a continuation of CHE 120 where the principles of chemistry will be covered in detail.  The topics covered will include kinetics, thermodynamics, equilibrium, acids and bases, and electrochemistry.

Prerequisites:  MAT 111 or MAT 116 or MAT 120, CHE 120 must have been completed in the past 5 years

MAT 255 - Linear Algebra

Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

Students will study the basics of linear algebra.  Topics include systems of linear equations, matrices, determinants, vector spaces, linear transformations, inner product spaces, eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Prerequisites that may be met concurrently:  MAT 120

DIG/COM/BUS 175 - Digital Marketing & Analytics

Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

Social media has become an integral part of today’s globally connected world. This interdisciplinary course examines the principles and tools used in digital marketing across various social media platforms.  Students will learn the following topics: audience analysis, consumer behavior, search engine optimization, digital channels, social media performance indicators, and social media content marketing strategies. Emphasis will be placed on using social media metrics and analytics to assess audience engagement and develop targeted marketing strategies.

The Mathematics involved in the advanced study of the factors contributing to the radiographic image and basic fundamentals of radiographic physics.

BIO 260 - Life on Earth

Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

This course will introduce students to the history of life on earth, from its earliest beginnings to the dawn of man.  Special emphasis will be placed upon the history of the vertebrates.  Topics will include the origins of life, continental drift, the earliest plants and animals, the Age of Reptiles, the earliest mammals.  Selected topics will also include methods in Paleontology, controversies over dinosaur extinction, and “Hot-Blooded” dinosaurs, the origins of flight and fossils and where to find them.

PSY 290 - Biological Psychology, 3 Cr.

Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

This course explores the relationship between biological and psychological processes. Students will examine the fundamental principles of neuroscience, including brain structure and function, neural communication, and the biological basis of behavior. Key topics include the neuroanatomy of the human brain, neurotransmitter systems, the impact of genetics on behavior, and the role of the nervous system in regulating emotions, cognition, and perception. In addition, the biological explanations of behavior will be discussed in relation to physiology, evolution, learning, memory, motivation, psychopathology, and the recovery of function following injury (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters).

Change in Instructional Hours and Pre-Requisites - Effective Spring 2025

HUS 103 - Human Services Internship II, 3 Cr.

Instructional Hours: 135 hours per semester in Internship

The Human Services Internship is designed to provide students with an opportunity to integrate theoretical concepts from the classroom with practical experience in a Human Services agency. Students will spend a minimum of 135 hours over the semester in an approved human service agency under the supervision of an experienced professional. Students are expected to develop appropriate learning objectives for their internship assignment with the assistance and approval of the instructor. In addition, students will meet regularly with their Human Services Instructor. The Human Services faculty will visit the agency at least once during the semester and more as needed.  Restricted to Human Services, Chemical Dependency, and Direct Support Professional majors.  (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.)

         Pre-Requisites that may be met concurrently: HUS 101, HUS 102

New Course - Effective Spring 2025

MUS 186, 286 - Musical Production I - II, 1 Cr.

Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lab

MUS 186: This musical performance course offers credit for musical production experience.  The student will be assigned the role of a pit musician in a musical performance and carry this aspect through a college production (Usually offered Spring semesters).
