EDU 120 - Disabilities Birth to Adolescence3 Cr. Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.
This course will familiarize students with the causation, assessment, and treatment of physical, emotional and cognitive disabilities experienced from birth through adolescence based on criteria established in the NYS Individual Education Program (IEP) or Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) for determining eligibility for a special education. An inter-disciplinary perspective including social work, rehabilitation, and exceptional education will be utilized in understanding the experiences of a person with a disability throughout the life stages of childhood and adolescence. Likewise, the role of the family member and helping professional will be addressed with an emphasis on the psycho-social aspects of disability. Major topics include socialization, legislation, demographics, intervention strategies, and ethical concerns. Also available as HUS 120.
