SOC 261 - Gender and Society

3 Cr.
Contact Hours Per Week: 3 Lec.

This course is about the social processes through which male and female biology is transformed and institutionalized within society to gender. Discussions focus on ‘maleness/masculinity’ and ‘femaleness/femininity’ in their current, cross-cultural and historical forms. The origins, the implications and the social reproduction of gender are examined. How gender norms are both constructed and challenged in social institutions like the family, the economy, the political system, education, religion and the media are addressed.
