The Career

The Sport Management program has been designed to assist students in one or more of the following areas: to develop their management skills and/or to prepare them for transferring to a baccalaureate program in sport management. Sport management programs offer students the opportunity to study the business aspects of sport, the role of sport in society and explore career opportunities. The world of sport and recreation has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry. Sport management professionals are the people responsible for the successful operation and growth of these organizations. Future managers need specialized training to serve the diverse demands of the growing sport industry.

The SUNY Niagara Approach

The Sport Management degree is a two-year academic program that includes three courses specific to this field. The coursework will provide students with an overview of the industry as well as specific skills designed to meet the needs of employers. Students in this curriculum will also take coursework that focuses on general business topics such as accounting, marketing and human resource management. This will provide them with a full complement of the skills needed in the business of sport.

This program is designed to meet the needs of the student in taking the first steps toward a career in the sport industry as well as those currently employed in the field who are seeking academic credentials to further enhance their career opportunities. The class sizes are small and personal attention to each student’s academic needs are addressed.

Admission

Students admitted in fall, spring and summer. The Sports Management, A.S. program is offered as a full-time day program, part-time evening program or online program.

Program Goals and Objectives

The Sport Management major is designed to prepare students to blend general management skills with the specific demands of managing sports organizations. Sport Management majors acquire a strong foundation in management, finance, communication, ethics and legal aspects of business.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of management and organizational skills in sport
  • Discuss ethics in sport management
  • Describe the role of governance in sport
  • Explain the role of governance in sport management
  • Outline the role of governance in business law

Program Requirements (SMGT)


  1. A total of at least 62-credit hours with a minimum curriculum grade-point average of 2.0. Academic Foundations courses do not count toward the degree.
  2. Computer Technology: A minimum of 3-credits selected from courses with either a CIS or CPS prefix
  3. Business: Business courses are brought in to enhance skills in the areas of marketing, economics, law and accounting as well as to lay the foundation for a career in sport management. A minimum of 24-credit hours to include:
    ACC116 - Financial Accounting  
    ACC 117 - Managerial Accounting 
    BUS 101 - Organization & Management  
    BUS 103 - Introduction to International Business  OR
    BUS 117 - Business Law I 
    BUS 113 - Fundamentals of Marketing  
    BUS 116 - Principles of Sales  
    SPM 101 - Sport Management 
    SPM 201 - Sport Policy  
  4. General Education: A minimum of 12-credit hours to be selected from two different categories:
    Humanities (HUMN)  
    The Arts (ARTS)   
    US History & Civic Engagement (USCV)   
    World History & Global Awareness (GLBL)   
    World Language (WLNG)    
  5. Health/Physical Education: A minimum of 2-credit hours consisting of:

  6. Communication: Written - General Education: A minimum of 6-credit hours to include:
